Happy Blue Moon New Year!

It's New Year's Eve, and we have a once-in-20-years blue moon today! I took the astronomical wonder as an opportunity today to think of what I'd like to create before the next blue moon (2 years away - the next New Year's blue moon is in 2028, but we get ordinary blue moons every couple years), as well as what I'd like to release. You could call it super-charged resolutions. I also think of it as mental decluttering. I made a fun little drawing of it all, starting at the moment of the full moon, then burned it on the snowy (yes!) fire escape at the moment of the lunar eclipse (another rarity on New Year's Eve). I got the idea from a gal named Morgana Rae, whose newsletter had a link to the site of a guy named Ton Pascal, where I found instructions for the ritual. It was fun, I feel good, and I'm full of energy to create/release the things I listed!

So. Today's physical declutter was the envelope and inserts from a bill I paid. I'll also file that bill and yesterday's bill to complete today's declutter.

HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE!

Wednesday

On Tuesday I ended up taking out the garbage and some recycling overflow, so that was my cleaning for the day.

Wednesday's declutter: I paid a bill and recycled the envelope. Also took out ALL the recycling, including the bags I usually bring back up. Since I have a surplus of bags, I thought it might be good to change out the old ones. More decluttering!

Did NOT end up watching the trading class - my guy's roommate had a party which we were invited to join, so the class went by the wayside! Next week, we are getting started again for sure.

Tuesday (Today)

I forgot to mention that yesterday I also recycled one magazine and took another down to the lobby, and took some coupons to the lobby too. Also threw away a lid for a Glad container. It was cracking, so no good anymore for keeping food. I might keep the container just to put stuff in. Or not.

OK, today's declutter: I printed out statements for a couple credit cards and matched up all the receipts to the right statements. Then I filed the newer receipts in the files for each card. Then I printed my internet service bill and filed that too (after paying it). Finally, I put the newest cash receipts with the pile that remains for Quicken entry. Oh, yeah, and I recycled a duplicate menu from my takeout menu file.

Going to see my guy tonight! And we're going to watch a trading lesson too, so maybe I'll get some trading in before year-end.

Results: Getting paid tomorrow, getting Unemployment payment the next day, getting an advance in a couple days on work I'll do next week! Hooray!

Monday

Monday's declutter: I spent 45 minutes entering receipts to Quicken. These are old receipts that I've held on to because I didn't feel like entering them when I got 'em. It's amazing - if I weren't such a procrastinator I wouldn't have so much clutter and so much cleaning to do. Food for thought for New Year's resolutions, which I normally don't do, cuz, why wait for the new year? But since the new year starts in two days, well, why not do a resolution or two? I can start them now. :)

As for cleaning, I don't think I spent 15 minutes on it, but I did do some. I cleaned my blender, which somehow got food spatters all over the base. Bug magnet! So I cleaned all the little crevices and it's nice and white again. Now I just need to find or replace the gasket so I can use the darn thing - gasket disappeared months ago. I think I accidentally flung it across the room when I was grabbing a utensil that it was hanging on in the dish rack, but it's also possible that it somehow landed in the garbage.

I also put away some clothes rather than piling them on my chair. And I did laundry but that's not really cleaning.

Results: I'm feeling good this morning. My health seems improved (knocking on the wooden table) and I'm managing to sustain my happy mood. Things feel like they are going my way!

Sunday

Today's declutter: Continued the filing by, well, filing it all. I did two 15-minute stints on this. Also recycled three newspapers earlier, and a bunch of expired coupons after the filing was done. During the filing I got rid of 7 or 8 envelopes too, and added to the shred pile.

I also did two 15-minute stints of cleaning, finishing up the bathroom. Amazing how much time it takes to clean up cat hair. I hope that future bathroom cleanups don't take so long. Maybe if I do it more often it won't :)

Now I'm at a point of needing to declutter bigger stuff again cuz the paper clutter is just about done. This is where it gets challenging for me. My brain sort of shuts off and I can't think of anything else to get rid of, even though I have tons of useless junk. We'll see how it goes!

Saturday, December 26, 2009

'Twas the day after Christmas...

...and I was TIRED when I woke up at 8:00. Went back to sleep till around 10:00 and was still tired, but I got up cuz the cat had to be fed. I spent most of the day knitting, watching TV, and eating, but in the back of my mind was my declaration that I'd do 15 minutes each of decluttering and cleaning.

So at around 5:30, I got started on the decluttering by taking the stack of papers and books on my table and sorting them out for filing, putting away, and recycling. I managed to put away a couple of books and magazines and sort stuff into piles for each drawer of the file cabinet, then hit a snag when I started filing because there were papers missing! So I had to hunt for the missing stuff, which took some time, and then put all THAT into the proper piles. I ended up doing two 15-minute increments. I didn't finish the filing yet, but I did recycle about 10 old newspapers and some stock info that I didn't need to keep, along with several envelopes from stuff I hadn't previously opened. This stuff had been hidden away at Thanksgiving, so it's about time I dug it out to be filed/trashed. Right now the cat is enjoying lying on the various piles of paper on the floor.

I then did 15 minutes of cleaning, spending the whole time on my shower tile and the tub. My shower tile is a mess all the time, because whoever put in the shower and faucets did a terrible job of retiling. The grout is disgusting, but since it's not a life or death issue I will have to write a letter to my landlord and probably call the city for a maintenance request in order to get it fixed. So I muddle through with cleaning as best I can. The tub is in a similar situation - the porcelain is peeling off. Personally, I don't know why the tub needs a porcelain coating anyhow. It's an old cast-iron tub and it's white, so to me the porcelain seems like an unnecessary bother. I'm sure the tub would be much easier to keep clean without it. Hm. Maybe I'll try to remove it.

Anyway. I had forgotten how good it felt to get things done, and how much can be done in 15 minutes. I'll be doing this again tomorrow - probably will finish the filing and clean the rest of the bathroom. Who knows, maybe I'll even do another 15 minutes on the filing tonight. I just got done doing the dishes (they don't count as cleaning cuz you really should keep up with them every day) though, so I might just sit back with my knitting and watch Britcoms and An American in Paris for the rest of the night :) Don't want to burn out my declutter urges!

Christmas Day - Happy Holidays!

Today I recycled some miscellaneous pieces of giftwrap. I save the stuff so that's pretty major for me!

I knitted a couple of Christmas gifts for friends, and came home inspired to finish a sweater I'd started some time ago. Only trouble was, I wanted to try a color design I came up with, but the sweater I'd started was done with a cable in the front. So I ripped out the whole thing and am starting over! I don't know if I can do this cuz there's no chart, it's just a drawing at this point, but hey, it's worth a try. I'm knitting the sweater in the round, which is fun cuz there's no seams to sew at the end! The sleeves could be interesting to figure out...but there are experienced knitters at a shop I know, so I can always take my sweater in and ask them their opinions on how best to do it.

Anyway, it was a lovely Christmas with my friends, I got some fun gifts that I'm enjoying, and tomorrow and Sunday I'm going to do 15-minute increments of cleaning and of decluttering and see where that takes me. Hopefully it will inspire me to do additional 15-minute cleaning/decluttering blasts! I actually already started today, when I put away a bunch of clothes that were piled up.

Oh, forgot to mention that I got five cards this week from family/friends, with a check from my parents in one of them! I thought that was pretty great :) Merry merry, everyone!

Christmas Eve

On Christmas Eve I took three headbands down to the lobby. I bought them for a costume but they were too small - apparently they were for little girls and even my small head was too big for them, haha! Someone in the building snatched them up right away, so some little girl should be pretty happy right now.

I also threw out some envelopes and the package inserts from some Xmas gifts I bought.

Happy Holidays!

Wednesday

Today I threw some dead flowers into the empty lot next door, for fertilizer just in case they ever put a garden there :)

Results: My work gave me a card with a little bonus cash in it, yay! And a co-worker gave each of us homemade cookies - they are GOOD! (I brought brownies.) My bosses also bought lunch for the office.

I also was overwhelmed today by the kindness of several strangers. I felt lightheaded at the grocery store, and a worker noticed and got me some water and then a chair. Later he got me ice (works for dizziness if you put in on the back of your neck) and brought a co-worker to stay with me. Even the store manager came out to check if I was alright or needed anything. They were ready to call an ambulance or a friend for me if I needed it. When I felt better, the guy who was staying with me walked me to the last item I needed to buy, and took me to the front of the checkout line so I could get home quicker. They really made my day.

THEN I met another woman at the entrance to the subway who said some kind things to me, which literally brought me to tears of gratitude. I've been feeling so low what with being sick so long and having a few numbers done on me, and these people today, along with one of my sisters and my mom, made me feel so much better just by being kind to me. Kindness goes a long way, people. Never forget how much it can mean to someone.

I also found four pennies today! It's been awhile since I found any change and it was fun!

Monday, Tuesday, Funday, Bluesday

On Monday I didn't declutter anything that I can remember. I did start making a Christmas present for a friend, and got a very nice $10 tree :) AND, I got to see my guy and he is getting me a present I really wanted! Very happy!

Today, though, I cleaned up my coffee table somewhat, which included recycling a couple pieces of paper. I also made a couple phone calls to complain about products I recently bought that weren't up to snuff, and then recycled the packaging for said products. I changed the cat litter (WAY overdue) and took out a bunch of recycling. And I went to the grocery store for brownie ingredients to take to work tomorrow cuz my boss asked me for brownies last week. Then I started thinking about some passive-aggressive behavior of some people I care about and got sad. I wonder what I ever did to deserve unkindness from family and friends, or maybe that's "friends."

But now the brownies are baking and the sugar from the leftover batter is making me happy again :)

Results: I had another eye appointment yesterday as a follow-up test to last month's cuz I was complaining of lowered vision. Did the test and my eyes are normal! Also got some trial contacts that are a slightly different Rx which might be better for me. Then today my complaint about one of the products garnered me some free product coupons!

Tomorrow: work and some more groceries, and whatever cleaning I feel like.

Sunday

Today I paid three bills and recycled the envelopes and inserts. I took it easy most of the day because while I was sick I coughed so much I hurt my ribs (the muscles), and they are finally feeling better, so I didn't want to set myself back by doing any heavy lifting. However, I got the garbage and recycling overflow ready to take out, and the dishes are done. Tomorrow I go to the eye doctor for a test, with some grocery and gift shopping along the way, and then I get to buckle down on cleaning Tuesday and Wednesday. Hopefully I will feel more energetic now that I'm finally well. Whew!

Time Keeps Flying...

Wow, between the show and being sick, I've totally been derailed from the decluttering effort. I am finally well enough to consider myself cured, although there's still a slight cough lingering. Three weeks of being sick is enough - I was beginning to forget what being well felt like.

Anyway. I decluttered yesterday. Had a plastic container lid crack as I tried to remove it, to the point where it's no longer sealing the container. So, lid and container went in the trash (they are #5 plastic and can't be recycled - at least not in NYC).

This week I'm getting back on track to actually get rid of stuff, so my honey and I can have a nice Christmas Eve together. Lots to do, feeling well enough to do it is good!

Oh yeah, the show! It went surprisingly well on Friday night, as up till I got on stage I wasn't sure I'd have a voice. Sunday was much better, though less consistent than Friday. I think it was adrenaline that saved me both times. One of my friends who is an amazing soprano paid me the nicest compliment on Sunday. She said given my handicap I should be very proud of how well I did. She could hear me throughout, and she said my acting was in character the whole time! I was very happy about that and am looking forward to seeing the video and sending scenes to my friends and family. I had eight friends there just to see me, and they all loved it and thought I did great! So it was a success though it would have been better had I been well.

Tuesday

Today I decluttered my mental state. I've been in a panic that I wouldn't be able to sing this weekend, but I did total vocal rest most of the day, and thought happy thoughts and watched TV to keep my mind off it. Then I called a friend to see if she had cough syrup, cuz if I can stop coughing the voice will have a chance to heal, and she did! And when she brought it to me she also brought soup and teas that are good for hoarseness. After eating her soup this weird feeling of being over the hump came over me. I sang a few notes this evening here and there, testing it out, and it's all there, just needs not to be aggravated by the cough. So I think I am going to be fine for the show, YAY!

Also recycled a sale flyer that came in the mail.

Sunday/Monday

I decluttered some actual clutter on Saturday besides the cans, but I can't remember what it was. Junk mail, I think. Been sick trying to get well, so haven't thought much about it...

Sunday I don't remember. I think I just sat around all day watching crummy movies till my friend brought me up some good ones. But Monday I threw out a catalog of business gifts, of all things. Since I'm not a business, I first called them up and told them not to send the biz catalog. I was on their retail catalog until recently, so they put me back on that - it's Godiva, gotta have my Godiva catalog!

I've been recycling food packaging all weekend, of course - soup cans, cardboard boxes, pill bottles (taking lots of herbs to kill the cold). Feeling better every day, almost singing again!

Ooo, results! I made $80 in my IRA account today on an option I bought Friday! Small profits add up, so I'm happy. This was a result of the trading classes I've resumed.

Saturday the 5th

Decluttering my sore throat today - bye bye! It's about time it started getting better. Also recycled a few cans today.

Friday, December 4, 2009

Friday

Today I paid three bills and recycled the envelopes and inserts. And I spent all day lolling about getting better. Throat is still buggin', but I've got my voice back, should be able to sing again in a couple days. Whew!

Setbacks

What a week. I can't remember what I decluttered but it's been CRAZY.

I had a lovely Thanksgiving with my guy, then went to Delaware the next day for voice lessons. First I went shopping for costume fabric, though, and found a gorgeous blue that was only $2 a yard! Looks like silk but it's polyester so it can be washed.

Had two lessons. The second was terrific and put me in amazing voice. Then came the setbacks. First, Greyhound bumped me to the next bus out because the idiots don't tell you that, in Wilmington, DE, online tickets have to get checked in and get boarding numbers. Without that, you're bumped. The next bus was going to make me a little late, but still okay. Then when it came, we discovered that two of us had boarding # 7. The bus driver wasn't gonna let me on for a minute, even though the woman who was right in front of me in line told her I definitely had a 7 cuz she was there and got a 6. Then someone else came up with another # 6! So the bus driver stopped loading and went indoors to find out what the hell was going on in there. She came out and said she was boarding for that bus only, but when I told her I'd been bumped from the earlier bus, she let me on. Needless to say, I will NEVER take Greyhound again. And I'm gonna call them and tell them I want my money back.

Phew, I made it on the bus! But then, on the way through NJ, we hit massive traffic. We got in an hour late and meanwhile I had developed a terrific sore throat. I went to rehearsal, and they had started late so I was just in time. Sang then went home and tried to do various things for my throat. Throat got much worse the next day and I had a fever, so I didn't go to rehearsal cuz I was worried about others getting sick. I made it to the next two rehearsals and sang mostly fine despite developing a cough. Went out Tuesday night with my guy and lost my voice the next day. I can talk but not sing. Same today, so the director of the company made other arrangements for my part for opening night tomorrow. The theater was freezing - 50 degrees or so - for all our rehearsals, which only exacerbated my cold. I even told the owners of the theater I was sick and could they please give us heat, and they didn't. So they'll be getting a bill from me for the stuff I had to buy to kill this bloody cold.

Bottom line: I don't get to sing tomorrow, and unless I'm much better I won't sing Sunday either. Next weekend I should be fine for the final two shows. I may have to go to the doctor though, cuz it's not normal to have a sore throat for five days.

Now, I believe that we create our own reality by the way we think about life and our general attitude. I've been working on a positive attitude and things have been going my way, so I'm really wondering why I created this particular reality, this week of all times. I wasn't thinking about being sick, and was feeling pretty good about my voice although I had been worried when we first started rehearsals. This cold just came out of nowhere to sideline me, so I gotta wonder if it's self-sabotage or something.

There were good things this week, too, which makes it even crazier that this happened cuz I'm still on a roll with the positivity! I found out I qualified for the trading program guarantee, so I'm getting an additional year of classes twice a week for free! That is major good news. I was a bit worried that I wouldn't get them. Maybe the worry showed up as laryngitis. I have to say, I'd rather have a couple days of laryngitis than miss out on a year's worth of classes that could help me make enough money to retire!

Enough said. Back to decluttering.

Sun - Weds

Well, I am sure I decluttered some papers the past four days, but I don't remember cuz I've been swallowed up in the rehearsal schedule :) I'm now in all four shows and all I've been thinking about is staging and how to make it work. We got that worked out pretty well in last night's rehearsal. Today I slept in - ahhhhhhh.

Results: I got my lessons set up with my teacher, going down there Friday! It should help me clinch the role - things have been feeling better vocally too. Also having Thanksgiving with my bf and feeling very happy about that. AND my baby sister got something taken care of that we've all been concerned about, so that is very good news! Oh yeah, my fridge got fixed, YAY!

Friday/Saturday

Friday I decluttered a couple envelopes and inserts. Yesterday I returned some cat food my boo didn't like and got a smaller bag of something else that she does. Yes, decluttering also includes stuff that won't get eaten!

Results: So excited! I got a library book I've been waiting for about singing. It's by my teacher's teacher, Cornelius Reid, a phenomenal voice teacher whose methods did wonders for me. With the opera I'm in now, I've had some trouble cuz it's very high, so I'm happy to have his book to help me remember what I used to do in lessons (it's been five years). It worked for a bit in rehearsal yesterday, I just need to practice at home now.

I've also been meeting cute singers all over the place this week. Such fun :)

Oh yeah, best of all: I made money on a trade Friday! in my CASH account, which makes me reeaaaallly happy!

Friday, November 20, 2009

Tuesday - Thursday

I didn't really declutter on Tuesday, but I did some dusting, and changed the sheets and turned the mattress.

Don't remember what I decluttered on Weds. Thursday I recycled a small box.

Oh, yeah, I recycled a magazine one of these three days.

Results:

Tuesday: Got taken out to dinner after rehearsal by a friend who's also in the opera :)

Thursday: Had to get some stuff notarized and the bank didn't charge me! Also my organic cotton towels arrived :) and I got some good deals on groceries on my way home from work.

Sunday's and Monday's Clutter

Sunday: I recycled another newspaper or two, and a tea box that was empty.

Today: I opened a bunch of trade confirmations and statements and recycled the envelopes. Also changed my ink cartridge and recycled the box.

Sunday, November 15, 2009

Saturday's Clutter

Yesterday I did 20 minutes of recording cash receipts into Quicken, and then recycled the receipts. It was about two months' worth of receipts. I also recycled three or four old newspapers and unearthed a bunch more cash receipts to record.

Almost forgot, I also returned a couple of empty ink cartridges to Staples on my new Rewards card! They give you money to spend there, $3 a cartridge. Pretty cool!

Results: Got invited to dinner by someone I dated this summer. And my bf called later in the evening to say hello. I also found a cheap salt lamp (candle holder) on craigslist. I was looking for them because they are supposed to be helpful with allergies and my bf is allergic to my cat. So I'm hoping it will help!

Also forgot to mention in yesterday's post that I got another call about work, this time for wine tasting. A friend of mine does this and said if there are liquor stores in my area that sell this particular kind of wine, he could set me up to do tastings! So I just have to check it out at the liquor stores nearby.

Time Flies...

Wow, I've never let two weeks go by before without posting. I have been sporadic about physical clutter, but mental clutter has been targeted almost every day!

Physical clutter: There have been a couple of bill-paying days in which envelopes and inserts were recycled. I have also gotten rid of catalogs and postcards that came in the mail, and yesterday I recycled two teabag wrappers. I'm sure there were other paper things, but the big deal is mental clutter.

Mental clutter: A few days before Halloween, I decided to commit myself to focusing on things that make me feel good. One of the best things is my cat, who is soft and furry and makes me laugh pretty much daily with the cute things she does. If nothing else comes to mind, thinking of the kitty is my fail-safe. Anyway, on November 2, I bought a notebook to write down lists of things that I feel good about. Been doing that pretty much daily, I think I missed one day. The results have impressed me.

Results: I started thinking of positive stuff the week before Halloween. At that time I was wondering if I'd have to go live with my parents cuz the money flow had stopped. I was waiting for a loan from one of my credit cards so I could pay the rent. I was a bit concerned.

On November 1, I went to a friend's musical, and met a lady who is an usher for a theater on Broadway. I asked her about that and she said she'd get me an application! It's part-time work that pays really well. She sent me the app a few days later.

On November 3, I got a call from a friend I used to work for. She had moved upstate and I had told her I wouldn't be able to continue to work for her. She'd found someone else but that person had flaked and my friend was desperate for help because of a deadline she had. She asked me could I come up to work for the day, maybe even stay over and work the next day. I said yes, packed up some stuff and caught the train up there. We got a lot done and she asked could I come back over the weekend. I said yes. Long story short, I made a ton of money AND got to spend time in a beautiful, quiet village in the country!

I had put in my weekly Unemployment claim on Thursday the 5th. My payments had stopped cuz they had to determine whether I was self-employed or not. I never heard from them on that, but when I checked on Friday just to see if any of the back payments had been approved, they had approved the most recent week! So on the 10th I got my first Unemployment payment in a month. I still haven't heard if they've made a decision on the missed weeks!

I got my rent payment on Monday the 9th - first time in a long time that it's been on time! All my bills are paid and I put money in my savings account to earn a little interest till next month's rent.

Oh, then on Monday or Tuesday, as I went to the bank with one of my checks, a lady on the corner was asking if people needed jobs. I said I did, and she handed me info on census jobs. I said, but won't it be awhile before those jobs start, and she said NO, they were starting right away! So all I have to do is call a number about taking a test and then take it. It's great cuz you can set your own hours and the pay is decent.

On a non-money note, I got a message on November 1 from my landlord about getting my fridge fixed! I had to defrost it again somewhere around that time, but it was a thorough defrost that has held, and I heard from the repair guy on the 12th re an appointment, so it looks like this is going to get done :)

The only thing that's changed in this past couple weeks is my attitude. I can't explain it, but it seems that it works to get rid of negative thinking. And I'm not even good at it yet! There have been a couple days where I was in the dumps and stayed there all day. I still yell at the computer when it's slow. I just have to wonder, what's gonna happen when I REALLY make an effort?

Saturday, October 31, 2009

Halloween - BOO!

I've been scaring up some clutter the last couple days, haha.

Friday: I took the copy writing program down to the lobby and deleted the craigslist ad. I got two spam responses to that ad - weird cuz I have never been spammed via craigslist before.

Today: Took 10 bottles and cans back to the store - 50 cents, baby! Also took a honey jar back to the honey guy hoping to get a refill. I didn't get a refill but he did take the jar. I told him jokingly that it would be 50 cents, and he laughed and then gave it to me! Nice, cuz the honey had gone up $1 since I last bought it.

I'm also doing a quick partial defrost on my freezer AGAIN. That's twice in one week. The defrost is definitely on the fritz.

Thursday Oct. 29th

Today I took the stack of papers to shred to work with me. I shredded all but three or four - the shredder was getting full and started to make some weird noises, so I figured the last few could wait for another week. But I got through a good 20 or 30 old bills and promotions, so I'm pleased to have that out of my house!

Results: Got the rent check today, plus about $75 in late fees! AND I got a notice from my mortgage company telling me the new payment - it's going DOWN!! Last year when it went down I continued to pay the same amount as the previous year, applying the difference to the principal. This year it will be twice the amount going to the principal!

Oh, I also figured out something really cool with my credit cards. I called one last week to do a balance transfer, and they gave me a really low rate on new purchases, and told me about their cashback program, which is currently giving 5% back on groceries and restaurants. I suddenly realized I could use that card instead of my debit card to pay for groceries, and then immediately make a payment to the credit card to cover the purchase. I get cash back, my higher rate balance may decrease depending on when the purchases post, and my minimum payment is covered! Just another way to stretch the dollars until my income increases.

Additional Results

Yesterday I forgot to mention one other result. On Monday night I went grocery shopping after rehearsal. When I got to the train I realized that the checker had not rung up the chicken I bought. When I got home I called the store to tell them and give them a credit card number, and they said "It's free." Because they made the mistake of not ringing it up, I got to keep it at no charge! Made my night - $7.25 worth of free food. Nice!

Today's Declutter

Woohoo, what a burst of energy! I've been feeling down today, and was just listening to a CD while watching the sky clear and become a beautiful blue, and I was suddenly taken with the urge to give away a copy writing study program I bought years ago and never finished. I never received the final section of the course because you had to finish the rest first, so I didn't think I could sell it. It was on the bottom shelf of a rack which holds videos. I pulled all the stuff from the bottom out, and found not only the copy writing program, but also some real estate stuff, a study book for a test I took almost four years ago, and some self-talk tapes. I got the program ready to take to the lobby, then started tossing. Five or six pages of real estate handouts went into the recycle bin, along with a very old list of foreclosed properties. Another paper went to the shred pile, and one fax went to be filed. The real estate booklet went to the closet with the other real estate stuff and one page of notes.

Finally, I recycled 15 unopened letters from the copy writing company (!), including one with a very old message from my boyfriend which added to cheering me up! I took the program down to the lobby, then decided I could sell it for $25 on craigslist, since it was incomplete. So I brought it back up and listed it. If there's no interest by tomorrow, I'll take it to the lobby!

I also cleaned the dust off the test book with a damp rag, then proceeded to clean off the TV and computer screens, and the bathroom mirror. I feel much better for the little burst of declutter energy!

Another week gone...

What a week, though! This will be a results post. I don't remember much about my decluttering, just envelopes and junk mail mostly, but I made a ton of money trading on Thursday and Friday! Apple had good earnings and shot up $10 the next morning, then went down a bit. On the following morning it was up all the way. I got in and even when the market took a dive at the end of the day I was still up $200. Got out the next morning with about $300 gross. Then that day I got into another option that gapped up $2 in the morning. Since I bought 2 of this option, I made over $400 gross! This was all in my IRA account, so I can't use the money, but still, I'm getting better at trading :)

This past weekend I volunteered at another PAX workshop. Such a great company. I came away feeling wonderful as always. There's something so fulfilling in giving of my time and energy. It takes me out of myself and my daily issues and just feels good.

Then Monday night we nymphs had our first rehearsal. We drilled through the music for two hours. It was GREAT, so helpful. I feel like I really have it now and it just needs a little tweaking. I'm going to try singing along with the CD today just to see. Afterward a couple of us started discussing costumes and got all excited about how fun it will be. I hope we end up in the same cast - there are two casts for this show and hopefully we will find out this week.

Tomorrow I'll be shredding the junk I cleared out last week. I'm doing some mental decluttering this week as well, by not dwelling on things that go wrong and instead focusing on things that I feel good about. Like this blog :)

Sunday, Monday, Tuesday

Before I forget, a couple weeks ago I recycled the last key to my old car, that I donated to charity a couple years ago. I kept forgetting to put it in the proper, so I'm just adding it now.

Sunday: I took 11 bottles back to the store for the deposit.

Monday: I paid a bill and recycled the envelope and inserts.

Tuesday: Recycled a TP wrapper, and some tinfoil. Got in a cleaning mood today and am reading another Don Aslett book called "No Time To Clean." Maybe it will help me figure out the fastest way to get and keep my place clean.

Saturday Addendum

Forgot to say that after my awful trading on Wednesday, I came up with a plan to limit my losses. This helped my trading a lot the next two days :)

This Week

I've been decluttering a lot the past couple days. Hard to remember back to Sunday, but I'll try.

Sunday: I continued the cleaning spree - took my shower curtains (big tub, need two), dust rags, and MOP HEAD (yes, it's one of the cloth washable ones!) to the laundromat. Don't remember if I decluttered anything, but I usually at least throw something in my recycle bin so chances are I did.

Monday: I paid a bill and recycled the envelope and inserts.

Tuesday: I don't remember what, if anything, I decluttered Tuesday.

Wednesday: I don't remember what I decluttered. Probably recycled an envelope or newspaper. Seems like I do that almost daily.

Thursday: After work I went to the grocery store, returning 5 cans and bottles and recycling 15 or 16 plastic bags. I may also have recycled a newspaper, don't remember.

Friday: I paid two bills and recycled the envelopes and inserts.

Saturday: On Friday I was feeling energetic and wanting to clean up the piles of paper clutter in my living room. So this morning after going to the farmers' market (where I found all the veggies I was looking for to make pork roast), I buckled down and got started. It actually was surprisingly easy to get going. I took tons of stuff out of envelopes and into piles for filing. Also moved some files into a box and cleaned out a bunch of useless papers to make room for the new stuff, which I then filed. Long story short, I recycled 42 envelopes and several inserts, 8 sample Christmas cards sent by a non-profit hoping to solicit an order, and 10 or 11 newspapers (I lost count), and have an inch-thick stack of papers to shred.

I also recycled an old quarterly report from stock I no longer own and about 20 pages of my cash expenses (with receipts) from 2003 - 06. And I removed 6 expired credit cards (!) from my files and cut pieces off each to throw away. THEN I changed the cat litter, and took that, the garbage, and the paper recycling out, as well as dropping off some unused recipe cards in the lobby. I proceeded from there to the grocery store to return 11 bottles.

When I got home I chopped and sauteed onions and chopped carrots for the pork roast. It's in the crock pot now.

Feels GOOD to get all that work done and cook something yummy for movie night tonight!

Results: Whoa. Well, first of all, it's cold out and we have heat! This is the most wonderful thing, because in the past my landlord hasn't turned the heat on till mid-October and even then he's been stingy with it. So I've been warm all week and am thinking it's a new trend! It's supposed to be a very cold winter here, which is actually good in terms of heating, because when it's really cold the heat stays on, and when it's mild it goes on and off.

I have traded four days this week. The first two days were extremely frustrating in that I kept getting in at the wrong time, so could not get out profitably. And Wednesday was a huge up day in the market, which made my sideways stocks even more frustrating. But on Wednesday night I got to spend some time with my guy, and I guess I needed to see him, cuz on Thursday nothing bothered me! My trades did better, and that continued on Friday.

On Tuesday, we had our first Ariadne rehearsal. I was a bit nervous cuz my music is nowhere near learned. I needn't have worried. There was ONE guy who knew his part. Everyone else had train wrecks at various points. It was crazy fun. This is fantastic music, the story is funny, and everyone is so talented. It is going to ROCK! There's not a weak link anywhere. Not only that, but we have incredibly talented conductors. I'm so excited to be part of this show!

Let's see, what else? Oh, I received a $5 coupon for my next contact lens purchase! This was the result of a damaged contact about a month ago, which was replaced. I guess they forgot to send the coupon till last week. Free money - I'll take it!

I got calls from a couple of friends I hadn't heard from in awhile, just to say hi and see if we could hang out soon. That was nice :)

Finally, back to trading, I got approved in a third account to trade options. This is an account with lots of money in it, so I will be able to do options on more expensive stocks that move a lot daily. I can just feel the money pouring in next week when I get started!

What a great week! Looking forward to more of the same!

Saturday

Today I decluttered an envelope after paying a bill. I never did make it to the farmer's market, but I did clean. I just put some clothes and shoes away and swept all the floors, but what a huge difference it's made! Oh yeah, I dusted some too.

It's amazing what cleaning up dust bunnies can do for a place. It feels decluttered even though it was just dust bunnies. Hurray!

Friday

On Friday I recycled an envelope and insert. I'm doing a lot of that these days, might be time to start decluttering bigger stuff :)

Today is cleaning day! Got a lot of mess and dirt to deal with and am not in the mood but it needs to be done so a little discipline is in order. First though, the farmer's market!

Wow, time flies!

Well. This week I decluttered most days but it's been a flurry of activity so I'm not sure what I did when. I know I forgot Saturday what with volunteering and needing to get some sleep. So here goes as best I can:

Saturday: Forgot.

Sunday: I tossed two old duplicate menus from my favorite sushi place. Then I tossed another old menu when I got a new one (different place).

Monday: Hm. I don't recall.

Tuesday: This was great. On Monday I was wishing I had more cash available so I could trade options on higher priced, volatile stocks like Apple. Then I got this great bolt from the blue about three shares of very expensive stock I owned. I bought it cuz someone once said it would be the next Berkshire Hathaway. Okayyyy, but it's not there yet and it's just been sitting in my account for a few years, tying up money that could be better used for trading options. So I sold it Tuesday and got into Apple!

Wednesday: I paid a bill and recycled the envelope and inserts.

Thursday: I recycled a candy wrapper.

Results: Wow, I am getting so many unexpected free days to trade. It's kind of great! On the one hand, I want to work cuz money is important :) But I am making enough to pay the bills, and it's really cool when I get a day free to watch the market so I can find good entry and exit points, and just learn about it all. So anyway, I've had time to do that this week!

I also started learning my music for the opera today! It's BEAUTIFUL. I get to sing a really gorgeous part, and it's hard as heck but I have some of it down pretty well already. I'm only in two scenes, really very little to sing, but it's good stuff! I'm going to have to work at it cuz there is no place to take a breath and it's got some awkward leaps into the stratosphere. This is my first true foray into coloratura territory and I am so looking forward to it!

Oh yeah, I also figured out that I really really love the man in my life :) That should be a given, but it came as a surprise to me today when I saw how much feeling was there. I've been unhappy in the relationship and while reading had a flash of insight as to why. Turns out I'm afraid of loving him more than he loves me cuz that's happened to me so many times before. So I've been shutting down the love. It was good to notice and good to feel my heart open up, even though it can be scary. I think my closing down affects him negatively, so if I can stay open and loving, we might both feel happier.

It's funny because the other night I dreamed of another guy I know, in a romantic context, and woke up feeling great cuz it was such a romantic and beautiful dream. Made me feel like love is right there for me if I choose it. Well, today I got to choose it.

It's been a great week!

Decluttered all week!

Monday: Recycled an envelope. Also defrosted the formerly auto-defrosting fridge. Apparently the auto-defrost timer is kaput.

Tuesday: Recycled a newspaper.

Wednesday: Recycled a sale flyer and a play program.

Thursday: I recycled a teabag wrapper.

Friday: Paid two bills and recycled the envelopes and inserts. Also recycled a menu left under my apartment door.

Results: I am working! There's lots to do and I'm really enjoying the people I'm working for. AND I'm doing real trades now. So far two wins and two losses. This weekend I'm volunteering for PAX's Celebrating Women workshop. I love the opportunity to be generous with others! To find out more about PAX check out this link:

Sat/Sun

Saturday: Paid another bill and recycled the envelope/inserts.

Sunday: Recycled a newspaper.

Saturday, September 26, 2009

Thursday/Friday

Thursday: I recycled a jar. I'd been using it for salad dressing but the thing just leaked or something. It was always greasy on the outside. I originally got it at the farmer's market - it was canned veggies. Makes me wonder how good the seal could have been on it. I also threw away a pair of pantyhose after wearing them and putting big holes in the toes. WHY doesn't anyone sell reinforced toe pantyhose anymore? I guess I could find them online and stock up ahead of time...

Friday: I don't think I actually decluttered anything today. Oh, wait, yes I did. Inadvertently and with much annoyance. I had to throw out my snap beans, which grew mold overnight somehow. Threw out the remaining lettuce I had as well, and some old grapes that were going bad.

I was actually going to eat the beans and lettuce, so I'm feeling like tossing them doesn't exactly count. Never thought that before.

Results: Wow, I worked most of the week! Made a lot of money and will be working again next week. I really like the new people I'm working with and for. It's so nice to be appreciated. I'm doing what I do best: catching up a backlog. There's a bit of cleanup involved too, also my specialty. It's fun! I could do it all day every day and be happy as a clam.

Hmmm. Reminds me of what Raymond Aaron says about doing only what you love. I guess I love doing cleanup bookkeeping! And I don't love having a title but no authority, or being given too much responsibility. I'm not ambitious, I don't need a position of power, I just want to do what I do best in a friendly and appreciative environment. So hooray! I get to do that now.

Tuesday/Wednesday

Tuesday's clutter: I recycled a newspaper.

Wednesday's clutter: I paid four bills and recycled their envelopes and inserts.

Last week

Last week I spent Tuesday thru Thursday dealing with a cold. I don't get sick often, so you could say I was due for it. Despite having a fever (which hasn't happened since something like nine years), I got over it pretty quickly WITHOUT the lingering hack that I usually get. I cured the cough before it got bad by several doses of propolis tincture and another tincture called Wellness Warrior, which is made by my friend Stephanie's company, Bioray. Two days of this was all it took to keep the cough relatively shallow.

Anyway, I don't remember what, if anything, I decluttered last week. Certainly some mail and papers went into the recycle bin, but that's about it. I was just resting a lot. Regardless of that though, I got results!

Results: The accountant I reached out to for referrals found me some part-time work! I'm going in this week to start. And, I got the role I auditioned for a week ago! Very very excited! I got to spend Saturday and Sunday with great friends, and met some cool new people, and one of them gave me a way to market my T-shirt!

Starting today, I'm recommitting to decluttering one item a day. I recycled some papers today so that is handled. I'm working three days this week, but I'm going to make sure I toss something each day.

Monday, September 14, 2009

Sunday/Monday

Sunday: I threw away a snaggy pair of pantyhose. I am FLOORED by how many of these I've tossed over the last few months. Every time I look for pantyhose to wear I seem to find yet another pair, but I swear I haven't bought any new for awhile! Funny. Oh, I also paid three bills and recycled their envelopes.

Monday: Today I changed the cat litter and took out a bunch of recycling, but I haven't actually decluttered anything yet. But the night is young! I'll probably recycle a newspaper or three.

Results: One of the people I sometimes work for emailed me today asking if I could come in this week! Yes I can, hooray! Also, I got cat litter and cat food on sale yesterday, and my neighbor gave me a bunch of his organic veggies today!

Saturday the 12th

On Saturday I took a velveteen jewelry pouch down to the lobby. My mom had given me some earrings in it for my birthday, but the pouch had dirt stains. So after an unsuccessful attempt to clean it, I took it down.

Results: I had the best thing happen just now. People can be really kind sometimes. I got my cell phone bill, and I had gone over my minutes for the first time ever. The bill was huge, $97 higher than normal. I was like, how can I pay this?

I decided to call AT&T and ask if they could help at all. I called and told them I was throwing myself on their mercy. I said I'd never gone over my minutes, I'm unemployed, I didn't know 800 #s were charged airtime although I've now seen it's in my contract, and I asked if there was anything they could do to help me.

The rep, Arlene, took a few minutes to look over my account. She saw that I had never gone over my minutes and usually didn't use that many. And she removed the entire overage for me, which put my bill back to normal. I almost cried, I was so touched by the kindness she showed me.

So remember: It never hurts to ask! Thank you Arlene, and thanks AT&T for hiring her!

September 11th

I've been down today - for a couple weeks, really - and wondered how much of it had to do with today's anniversary. Then I saw a news brief about it and broke down. For me, September 11th was a wake-up call for love and peace that our country failed to heed.

I hope the sacrifice of those who died is one day honored by peace among nations and peoples. We will never forget you!

Tuesday - Friday

Tuesday: I paid a bill and recycled the insert.

Wednesday: I found a small shopping cart and took it home - just the right size for things like groceries, which hurt my arms to carry home! I recycled another insert from a bill.

Thursday: Recycle, recycle, recycle. I bought a pot pie and recycled the package. Kinda cheating I guess...

Friday: Paid a bill and recycled the envelope.

OK...not a big declutter like I planned for the week. But I've been so down about things, feeling sad and wondering what's it all about, Alfie.

So. I did get results, though! I have another shot at auditioning for a role in the next opera, and I finally got ahold of my former boss and let him know I'm looking for work. He's going to keep his ears open, which is all I can ask. I hope he ends up needing me himself, cuz he's the best! I also got my first unemployment deposit today (they do direct deposit now - sweet!), and I got a line on a possible job also. Things are happening!

Saturday - Monday

I took another break from decluttering this weekend. Went to the beach on Saturday. It was beautiful there, just what I needed. I'm sure I recycled some stuff, cans and papers, etc., but I didn't keep track.

This week is declutter time. I've got stuff to list on craigslist for sale, and the whole year's worth of bookkeeping to catch up on in Quicken. Also housecleaning. All this while I look for work!

Results: Actually am having good results with paper trading again. I got out of two trades today at a profit. When I get 10 in a row it's time to use real money!

September's Here!

The weather has been lovely and cool this week. Too soon for me, I'm not ready for fall yet!

This week's decluttering:

Tuesday: I threw away a facial scrub bottle that was empty. Or maybe I recycled it.

Wednesday: I think I poured some very old milk down the drain. Might have been Thursday. It was surprisingly un-soured. Didn't smell bad at all.

Thursday: Paid a couple bills online and recycled the envelopes.

Friday: I cleaned my fridge! Tossed out old broth, an old onion, and old cottage cheese. Also froze a bunch of things and picked through some aged cilantro to get the good stuff out before tossing it. It looks good in there!

Results: I had a burst of energy yesterday like those I used to get at least once a month. It's been MONTHS. I guess the stress of the job was wearing me out. I've also been actively paper trading. It's frustrating when it goes wrong, but I'm learning. That's why you start on paper and not with real money!

What IS that? Sat - Mon., end of August

On Saturday I continued decluttering by throwing some baking soda and vinegar down my bathroom sink. It was draining very slowly. Unfortunately this only jammed it up worse, so I had to take apart the plumbing and dig out the muck. Pretty gross, but I got it cleared. Then I tried the kitchen sink.

It also clogged completely, so on Sunday, I took that plumbing apart. The sludge I dug out of there was like nothing I've ever seen. I can't describe it. It had to be grease and other stuff, but for the life of me I can't figure out how so much grease could get down that drain. I haven't changed my eating habits a lot in the last year, but the sink is regularly clogging up where before it used to drain fairly well most of the time. Two pipes were completely full of whitish sludge. I had to throw it down the toilet, and I was afraid it would clog that.

I also got rid of two partially used bottles of Amway stuff, and a partially used bottle of pet stain remover. My cat doesn't leave stains cuz I have hardwood floors! :)

On Monday I think I tossed an envelope from some piece of mail.

So much letting go and shifting around right now that I'm freaking out. Also feeling sad, like life is passing me by. All the important things in life, at any rate. Fall weather tends to make me see that, whatya know, I'm still in the same rut I was in a year ago, and the year before that. It's a bit of a downer. But this, too, shall pass.

Weds. - Sat.

Wow, end of August already. Time just flies when you're gettin' old :)

I don't believe I decluttered anything the last three days. Maybe some pieces of papar. I was busy with learning some things and also just decompressing from the stress of the ex-workplace. I'm so glad to be out of that situation - there is nothing worse work-wise than working for someone who doesn't want you there and is actively seeking your replacement. I'm amazed it took me five months to screw up, as stressed as I was. Am also glad that it was a fixable screwup.

Anyway, today I have decluttered. I paid a bunch of bills and recycled the envelopes and inserts. There may be more decluttering today, we'll see! But in any event I'm back on the decluttering track!

Wednesday, August 26, 2009

Friday - Tuesday

Well, I've let the time slip by longer than I planned, and didn't realize Friday's declutter wasn't up here! Grrr. Thank goodness I posted what I planned to declutter on Friday!

Friday: I took those shoes down to the lobby.

Saturday: I don't think I decluttered anything today.

Sunday: Not sure I did any declutter today either. My goodness!

Monday: I paid a bill and recycled the envelope.

Tuesday: Big declutter today. My main job went away. I'm not sure yet if I decluttered it or if it decluttered me. At any rate, I did something incompetent and got fired. I've known it was coming for months and I think the stress finally got my brain and made it stop working.

Results: My neighbor gave me some yummy veggies from his organic garden! I also received an email this week about auditioning for a small role in the next BRO opera.

And getting fired is also a result, because the stress was not good for me. So although I didn't want it to be this way, it's for the best. As one of my friends said as he bought me a drink last night, when a door closes a hallway opens (never heard that version before, didja?). And one of his friends asked me to send him my resume, so you never know.

Thursday, August 20, 2009

Monday - Thursday

Monday's clutter: I recycled a shoe box, and took a black swivel chair (with no back!) down to the lobby. It was serving as a piano stool, but I now have a bench thanks to my friends, and I really couldn't think of a reason to keep the chair. Also didn't have a place for it.

Tuesday's clutter: I recycled an envelope (wowee, what a big declutter!).

Wednesday's clutter: I shredded some stuff at work.

Thursday's clutter: No declutter today that I can think of. I did shed some fear and begin paper trading in my virtual account via Think or Swim. There's a pair of shoes I might get rid of and I could take them down tonight...will post if I do.

Wait, I recycled a newspaper. So I did my declutter and can do the shoes tomorrow if I decide to.

Results: I had a checkup and I am healthier than the last time I went for one, which was two or three years ago! Just have a couple of vitamin deficiencies - B12 and D. I had read that Vitamin D deficiency was becoming very common due to the paranoia about sun damage and skin cancer. I've never been afraid of the sun, but for whatever reason I'm not gettin' enough of it! The doctor said this could explain my general tiredness, and also my itchy skin! So I'm taking my vitamins religiously and if I don't feel better soon I'll get the ones he recommended.

I also had a dentist appointment, and had my first fillings. It's official, I have cavities. I guess it would have been hard for me to get through life with no cavities at all, but 44 years is a good long stretch! Technically, I've had one of them awhile, but it wasn't bad enough to get a filling when it was first discovered. It was sort of a pre-cavity, so the dentist put a sealant on it. Anyway, though, the fillings took about 10 minutes, no novocaine needed, barely any drilling. I don't know, I've never had a bad experience at any dentist's office, I don't really get why people are so afraid of dentists!

The Weekend

Saturday's Declutter: I paid a couple of bills and recycled the envelopes and inserts.

Sunday's Declutter: The roach problem is not quite resolved, though it's better since the rain has let up. I recycled a bunch of aluminum foil that I was going to reuse, that was in a newly-infested drawer. Yuck.

I read that catnip or bay leaves are good natural roach repellents. Tried catnip. Didn't work. I've now bought bay leaves and will scatter liberally in my silverware drawer as I give another shot to putting my kitchen back together. I think I'll crush them so the odor is nice and strong. This time I'm only putting the silverware organizer and a few spoons and knives back in, so that if they come back I won't have to wash every single utensil I own again.

This Week

Well. I seem to have fallen off the rails with the decluttering this week. I've done some, but not kept track, with the result that this post will be somewhat thin.

I forgot that last Friday I tossed three pairs of pantyhose. They seem to wear out faster than they used to. Maybe that's cuz you can't find reinforced toes in NYC. Stupid city. Supposed to be able to find anything here, and I can't find a damn pair of regular pantyhose with reinforced toes. What the heck?

So I don't remember what I did Sunday, other than grocery shopping. Probably tossed a receipt or envelope or something. Oh, I remember, I watched a movie that I had picked up in the lobby a few days earlier, and when I was done, I took it back to the lobby.

Monday I went to a friend's house and watched a trading class. I'm learning about strategies for the stock market, mostly using options. It was good and we spent a nice day together. I don't think I decluttered anything.

Tuesday I got rid of another pair or two of pantyhose. I keep finding more pairs, so I try them on for holes, and usually pitch 'em. I had to buy a pair that morning to go with my heels.

Wednesday: I recycled of a tiny piece of paper that came in something I bought. And then I found a couple more papers to recycle for good measure. I did lots of laundry too, a load before work and one after.

Thursday: I tossed an envelope and insert from a bill I paid online. Also tossed a defunct UPS deposit envelope from a bank that is also defunct. And I inadvertently decluttered my umbrella by leaving it at a party. I'm hoping someone found it and will get the email I sent out about it. But I got it free in the first place - brand-new umbrella just tossed on the street because it got blown inside out. Easy come, easy go!

Friday: Shredded an ancient deposit slip from the defunct bank.

Results: I went out all week! Tuesday night I went to a friend's fashion show. She sells gorgeous clothes from a company called CAbi. They are designed by a woman who knows how to design for women! So the stuff looks great on everyone no matter what size. Anyway, my friend had her samples from spring on sale half-off. There was a gorgeous jacket I had wanted back in the spring, and she had it in my size, so I got it. I wore it a lot this week too, but no one even commented on it, which I found surprising cuz it's SO flattering and pretty. But I guess people had other things on their minds!

I also went to an after-work get-together given by a friend of a friend. All the people there worked in a specific area of my industry, and everyone was so nice. One of the guys was sending another woman home in a stretch limo as I went to them to say goodbye, and he insisted on giving me a ride too! It was something! I lost my umbrella, but my goodness, was I ever spoiled!

Finally, last night I had my second date with that sweetie from last week. We went dancing and oh, my! It was fun, he's a doll, and I'm swooning!

I'll do better this week with posting and staying on top of the declutter. I guess I couldn't expect to keep it up forever, but I'm a little disappointed in myself all the same. So I'll get back on the horse and keep going!

Sunday, August 9, 2009

Saturday

On Saturday I recycled a piece of cardboard. Whee!

Results: The roaches seem to be slowing down. It's been mostly rain-free this week, so maybe my kitchen will be normal again soon. I'm thinking of putting the silverware in the oven in the meantime. I think it's too hot in there for bugs to like it. I've got all my utensils stashed in a couple of vases right now.

Took lots of naps Saturday too. I always seem to be exhausted by the weekend, and I literally did nothing Saturday but eat, sleep, and read. And talk to friends on the phone. I don't think I've ever been quite so indolent - usually I find it too boring. But this was lovely :)

Saturday, August 8, 2009

Wed. - Fri.

Wednesday: You could say that I was the clutter getting thrown out Wednesday instead of the other way around. Or at least, it appears that's what's going to happen in a certain area of my life in the near future. Anyway, I wasn't thinking much about physical decluttering, and don't remember if I did any. I was taken out for a drink by a good friend, who talked things over with me.

By Thursday afternoon I was panicking because everything seemed to be changing all at once, and I realized I'd have to let go (emotionally) of some old to make room for the new. So again, I was too upset even to think about decluttering and don't recall if I did. I was able to talk with another friend about it, who gave me a hug and some tea and listened to my panic. Then I was taken out to dinner by still another friend, and taken good care of, which made me feel much better.

Friday was better. I recycled a piece of mail. The panic receded, to be replaced by excitement, and I was able to think more clearly. I have many options and a tentative plan of action to make at least one of the changes blow up or go away.

Results: I had a DATE! with a real sweetie, which I enjoyed very much!

Tuesday, August 4, 2009

Sunday - Tuesday

Sunday's Declutter: I threw out about five Ziploc bags. My kitchen is overrun with roaches due to the tons of rain we've had, and I didn't feel like rewashing a bunch of plastic bags.

Monday's Declutter: I paid five bills and recycled the envelopes and inserts.

Tuesday's Declutter: Recycled or shredded three warranties/instruction papers regarding an item I no longer own.

Results: WELL! On Monday as I went to the grocery store, I passed my local Conway, which had $2 clearance items on a rack outside. How could I not stop and look? I bought a $2 summer dress, perfect for running around on my day off and cute enough to wear out, and a $2 grey tank top perfect for working out at the gym - which I'm back to doing.

Then I saw some $5 pedal pushers and some $3 sleeveless shirts. I tried on the pedal pushers in the line. They seemed to fit but when I got them home they were too large in the waist (story of my life). But the sleeveless shirts, which I actually looked at after going to the grocery store, were PERFECT for work. I got four, two white, one ivory, and one that perfect blue that women's office work shirts so often come in. They are a perfect fit - I did NOT expect that in a $3 shirt! And they will work well in the office and just hanging around. I will try to take the pants back as they really are a poor fit. Should have guessed that pants in size SMALL would not be a good buy. Still, for $5 it's not bad. I'm thrilled with my new, very inexpensive, clothes.

Saturday's Declutter

Today I recycled my printout of the music from the opera I was in in June. I don't need it for anything, don't remember why I decided to keep it. Maybe to learn part of a role? No idea. It's gone.

Friday's Declutter

I was looking in my photo album for a specific photo, which wasn't in there, and realized I had a bunch of photos of dark sky and not much else. They were teenage attempts at photographing sunsets or something, but you couldn't tell. So I tossed them. There were seven. There's also a photo of pretty tree foliage that doesn't look so neat now. I'm going to scan it for a friend cuz of other items in the photo, then chuck it. I also took out three photos to send to a friend, since they are of her stuff. That's 11 photos gone altogether.

Wednesday/Thursday

Wednesday: I recycled a fortune from a fortune cookie. I think that might be the tiniest declutter yet.

Thursday: Took a brochure for a great women's workshop down to the lobby. I got it the other day at the get-together in the park.

Results: I got my friends' piano bench today! I originally wasn't going to take it because my piano is this mahogany color and the piano bench is black. But, the painting I got from them has a black frame, and it's hanging over the piano, so the bench ties right in with it. Yay, a place to store some of the music that's sitting on the piano!

Also had still more fun painting last night. My friends took me and another helper out for dinner, which was yummy. Some of it came home with me and was my breakfast this morning. MMMMMM-mmmm!

Oh, yeah, and I got paid yesterday, worked and got another check today, and have another payday tomorrow! Loving the steady cash flow!

Tuesday Night

Today's declutter: I took a too-cute skirt down to the lobby. Realized it was just a little too young for me. I also took a CFL to Home Depot for recycling! Finally, I threw away two pairs of pantyhose with holes/runs.

Had more fun painting tonight. My friends are happy for the help, and I love painting so it's of mutual benefit!

Monday, July 27th

Today's declutter: I sold my bike! Made $50.

Results: The $50!

I also had a fun day helping my friends paint their NEW apartment. They gave me the most delicious tuna salad I've ever had in my life! and a yummy frozen yogurt with fruit. We did a lot of prep work with the result that I got to paint around 6:30, for a half-hour before selling the bike. But I'll probably head over there tomorrow after work and paint some more cuz it's so fun! I did some edging for the living room ceiling tonight.

And lastly, I FINALLY got the video program installed for the investing classes I'm taking! YAY! Now I just gotta fix the sound...halfway there!

Sunday July 26th

Today I deleted 226 emails. I think I recycled something too, but I can't remember!

I updated my computer system and hung my new painting too! The painting looks really nice over my piano.

Friday/Saturday July 24/25

Friday's Declutter: I came home from work and found one of my glass candle holders on the floor in pieces. Guess the cat knocked it off the coffee table - little stinker. So that got swept up and thrown away, along with the candle inside. I also shredded a page of sensitive but outdated mail at work.

Saturday's Declutter: Recycled two inserts from my phone bill.

Results: I got a call Friday morning regarding more work next week. Also had an opportunity to clear the air a bit with someone I care about. There could be more to do there, but what was said was good.

Then yesterday I got to reconnect with a great group of women, and meet new ones. What we have in common is workshops we've taken by a company called PAX. This company promotes harmony between men and women by helping women understand men. It's changed my life and changed the lives of many women I know. Here's a link for more info:

Celebrating Men, Satisfying Women

New York women, if you'd like to improve your relationships with the men in your life, there is a discounted workshop in Manhattan at the end of August, led by a wonderful married couple. It's the last discounted workshop in the foreseeable future, and a great deal. I'm excited that I was asked to volunteer for it (which is also a great chance to review the info). I volunteered once before, and loved how great it felt to be there for these wonderful women. So I'm taking the opportunity to do it again! To register, go to:

Thursday the 23rd

Today's declutter: I tossed pieces of several old credit cards in the trash. I'm a bit paranoid about credit cards, so when one expires, I cut a piece off to throw away, and then wait awhile before cutting off another piece. That way the people that dumpster dive for new identities get nothin'.

I did some credit card pieces last week too, but I didn't remember it so I didn't post it.

So it's kind of up and down this week with the physical clutter, but the mental clutter is clearing off well. Today I found some gratitude for someone who's been giving me a hard time lately, but who has been a good friend to me overall. Time to focus on the good!

Results: Made a bunch of money today!

Monday - Wednesday

I have been on a decluttering roll! Got rid of big stuff this weekend, put an ad on craigslist to sell my bike and got a lot of interest. The first buyer flaked but there are others lined up. Check it out:

Monday: I didn't make it to the thrift store today. Needed serious downtime. Instead, I took two books down to the lobby. Also picked up my painting from my friend's, and another friend gave/lent me an external hard drive to use to back up my computer so I could update the system. Yay!

Tuesday: Recycled an envelope and an unfolded paper clip. OK, I know that's weak but wait...

Wednesday (today): Wow, I decluttered my MIND today! Spiritual insight, blew my mind, had a great day of what some people call "flow." Good word for it, really. I felt like nothing could touch me, like everything was in its place and happening because I planned it that way. Pretty cool.

Then, I came home and found out the bike buyer was flaking out, sent an email to the first of the other potential buyers, and took that huge bag of mostly my friends' clothes (that I never sold on eBay), plus some old towels I decided I could replace - cuz I CAN do better than that - and a couple of my own clothing items, to the thrift store. I also recycled 7 plastic bags at the grocery store. I now have room in my hall closet! LOTS of room. And I'm ready to let go of a whole lot of baggage too.

Saturday/Sunday

Well, big decluttering this weekend.

Saturday: I threw out three envelopes and an old hair scrunchy that was stretched out. However, I also got started on stuff for the thrift store, in going through several drawers and pulling stuff out. I washed some of it that was extra dingy, and the rest went in a bag for today.

Today (Sunday): I took the bag of clothes, along with most of the yard sale stuff that didn't sell, to the thrift store. I got rid of 6 assorted t-shirts/tops, one shirt, four bras and a peignoir set, and a pair of baseball Keds that unfortunately had holes in the toes. I'm hoping they can repair them cuz they're SO cute. Yard sale stuff was: crystal heart container, Harry Potter tie, painted plate, lipstick case, leather change purse, black purse, turquoise pumice castle, tiny glass cup and saucer, oil burner, 2 Robert Jordan books, and the address book and photo holder from a wallet I decided to keep. I also took over a set of well-used jersey sheets and a black wallet that has seen better days.

My drawers feel a little emptier...tomorrow I'm taking over a bunch more stuff before my friends ask for their cart :). AND I'm picking up my painting!

I found something out today about my clutter. I hang on to this stuff (and other things) because I think I will never do better than what I've got. So even if it's broken or I don't wear it or I have three others, I hang on cuz I think this is as good as it gets. It's very freeing to notice that I have this belief. Makes it much easier to let stuff go.

Friday and More Thursday

Last night I got rid of some more stuff, papers I'd collected for a sort of inspiration collage book. These didn't inspire me anymore, so they got recycled! Maybe 30 magazine pages? There was something else too but I don't remember what. Probably a newspaper (getting predictable these days).

Today I took a page of stickers to the lobby. They were of flags that used to fly on ships in the 1700s (They came with my pirate calendar - hey, it was $4!). There are some little boys in the building, so I hope they find the stickers and have fun with them.

I am going to do more decluttering this weekend while I have my neighbors' cart. Can take a lot to the thrift store in that thing! Also if I have the energy (very sleepy lately) I'll take some photos of stuff to sell on craigslist. Gotta clear it out! Need spa-a-a-a-c-c-e!

Thursday, July 16, 2009

Thursday

Today I took out a pet hair remover. It just doesn't work well on what I need it for (clothes). Maybe it will work for someone else.

Results: I had three people comment on my t-shirt today. It's the one that I created. Two cashiers at Whole Foods really dug it. Both of them said I could totally sell it. Here is a photo, just for fun:

If you like it, let me know! If you know anyone who'd want one, let me know!

Tuesday/Wednesday, and still more Sunday

Forgot that on Sunday I hung up a beautiful crystal that some friends gave me for my birthday, and recycled the box and tissue it came in.

OK, Tuesday: I recycled a paper and a couple of puzzle pages (thanks Mom!), and threw away two pairs of pantyhose with big runs. A third pair got tossed in the evening after I wore them.

Wednesday: I sold some stock! at a profit. I recycled a newspaper at work but don't recall if it was one I picked up that morning or one from the day before (if I can't finish the Sudoku, I keep them till I can). But I think unloading that stock counts. I had it for years and should have sold it at a much higher price.

Results: OMG, there has been so much going on! I am feeling very good and prosperous right now. I'm also focusing on love and am receiving it from so many unexpected and new places. It's really proving to me that what if I want something I need to focus on it, rather than on the fact that I don't have it yet.

Monday, July 13, 2009

Monday and the end of Sunday

To add to Sunday, I also recycled two newspapers.

Today, I recycled 15 plastic bags and a newsletter from my insurance company.

Results: I got my rent check today! Also, one tenant is moving out and the rent is going up for the new tenant. AND, I picked up my Whole Foods gift card and used it on groceries! Things are going well!

This Week

I've been very slack about keeping track this week, and have only the vaguest idea of what I decluttered day to day. Probably recycled newspapers Tuesday and Wednesday, and/or deleted some spam emails. I decluttered a lot of papers at work on Wednesday too, not that that counts for this project. I know I shredded three sensitive junk mails on Thursday, and threw out some dead onions yesterday. Also recycled a box yesterday. Having a hard time remembering if/what I tossed anything on Friday. Oh, I think it was junk mail, after calling to get my address off their list. Today I threw out dead strawberries and an old contact lens case (you get a new one with each order of lenses).

I did do that mental declutter, the speaking up, on Wednesday. It was marvelous. I was terrified, did it anyway, did not feel good about the result, and then miraculously the next day realized that I no longer had a conflict as something that was said in the process cleared up the issue. So life marches on as usual. Which may or may not be a good thing...

Results: Extra work this week and next, from two sources. AND, some friends are giving me some artwork they will not have room for in their new apartment!

Monday, July 6, 2009

Monday, Monday

Big declutter today! I borrowed my neighbors' shopping cart and took two bags of clothes - 32 separate clothing items - to the thrift store. I also took a pink child's chair that I had in the house as a funky decoration. My mom told me during her visit that it added nothing to the room, so I donated it.

Most of the clothes were items I'd been given to sell on eBay. That didn't happen, nor did the yard sale work out, so I bit the bullet. There were a FEW of my own items in there - a pair of old penny loafers that no longer fit (waaah!), a pair of black boots that I don't need, a pair of fuzzy socks, and a T-shirt that was extremely unflattering on me.

I also returned a bunch of cans and bottles and got back $1.10.

Also decluttering mentally again. Got something to say to someone that is difficult but can't NOT be said, so I'm psyching myself up for that.

Day After 4th of July

Today I recycled two newspapers and decluttered my keyboard (you would not beLIEVE the pile of cat hair I got out of there).

Fourth of July

Today I cleaned my oven with an old sponge and then threw the sponge away.

Results: I've been finding a lot of change on the street this past week. AND, a very famous mentor who did a guest post on this blog made his Facebook friends an offer we couldn't refuse! I'll be letting everyone know when the check rolls in...

Happy 4th of July!

Friday, July 3, 2009

Friday

Today I recycled two newspapers.

Thursday, July 2, 2009

Thursday, July 2

Today I recycled two plastic bags at the supermarket.

Results: Four days off this coming weekend! I'm pooped so I'm really glad of the downtime.

Wednesday, July 1, 2009

Monday - Wednesday

Damn, I'm on the slippery slope now! I missed one day, and only four days passed before (I think) I missed another! Can't get in that habit after doing so well for so long.

So, Monday, I cannot remember decluttering anything. Most likely I recycled something, but till I remember, it's a missed day.

On Tuesday I gave my mom a stuffed bear and pair of kids' socks (both new) to take home to my niece. The bear was a gift to me that I really don't have a home for, and the socks were a gift I bought for an adult friend, and then could not give her as they were kids' socks! What can I say, I bought them in the middle of the night at the Chicago airport. I wasn't exactly awake. Oh, yeah, I also cut some pieces off old credit cards and threw them away (I'm a bit paranoid, only throw away a piece at a time so no one can put the number together).

Today I recycled an envelope and insert from a bill I will be paying online.

Results: Hey, this is great! Today I got home and found out I won a Whole Foods gift card in a drawing from a play I went to a couple months ago! I had forgotten all about it! It's perfect, I shop there all the time!

Sunday, June 28, 2009

Sunday the 28th

Today's declutter: I deleted 96 emails and emptied the email trash. I also recycled two newspapers.

Saturday, June 27, 2009

Saturday June 27th

Today's declutter: I recycled three plastic bags and one newspaper.

Friday, June 26, 2009

Friday June 26th

Tonight I tossed four containers of dead food out of my fridge. This was partly to get in extra items after yesterday, and partly to clean my fridge as I meant to do before my mom came to visit. It was a bonus toss, because the food AND the containers went in the trash. They were cottage cheese containers and I certainly don't need so many of them, although having two or three is handy.

Results: I'm getting better at a trading strategy I've learned. Starting to rack up wins paper trading. When I get ten in a row I get to trade real money!

Oops! Thursday

Well, it's finally happened. There were a few times when I wondered if decluttering after midnight counted for that day, since I was still up. I more or less decided it did. But yesterday, I think I finally missed a day altogether. Unless I remember something later, I didn't declutter on Thursday.

I just have to say, 4 months and a week of getting rid of one item a day is a pretty good run! And I'm getting right back on the horse and going forward as usual. Perfectionism is not what this is about.

Wednesday, June 24, 2009

Mon - Wed.

Monday: I threw away a pair of pantyhose with a big run right smack in the middle of the leg.

Tuesday: Shredded four sensitive pieces of mail.

Wednesday: Recycled an egg carton and eyedrop box, and the envelope my converter box coupon came in.

I also did a lot more cleaning on Monday morning and Tuesday morning to get ready for my mom's visit. She is here now and we are having fun although she is having some pain in her feet from walking around so much.

Sunday, June 21, 2009

Summer Solstice Revisited

Just remembered I also hung up a picture that kept falling off the wall (it was taped up). It hit me that I have duct tape, so it's up and I know it is never coming down again!

And, I put all my loose cans and bottles in a single bag to return, so the entry is neat now.

Summer Solstice

The cleaning and decluttering continued in full force today! I threw out two large sheets of plastic that covered my windows in the winter, and three articles of clothing that were pretty much ruined and unwearable. I recycled 77 old investment newsletters - that was a big deal, cuz I have hung on to these for years. That freed up space in my file cabinet so I'll be able to reorganize my files more easily when my mommy comes to visit! She's very organized and said she'd help.

I also recycled 13 more newspapers and put away (hid) the miscellaneous piles of paper I couldn't deal with now. I put a box in the closet and consolidated the remaining yard sale stuff into two small boxes with lids, then recycled the other three boxes. My friend came to look at the peach baskets and decided she didn't want them, but said she thought I could use them to keep stuff in. She wondered if one would fit on top of the bookcase, but it's too narrow. I showed her a smaller basket and she decided to take it. Later I took a bowl back down to her from a treat she brought me. She suggested again that I use the peach baskets to store the remaining papers. That gave me an idea - I had room on top of the kitchen cabinets! I put the boxes of yard sale stuff and the remaining piles of paper in the baskets and stuck them up there. It looks good and the clutter is hidden for now. I took a picture and showed my friend and she and her husband thought it looked great - a little decorative!

As for cleaning, I did another load of dishes, stripped my bed and flipped the mattress, and then put on clean sheets and got out a green blanket to make it nice and pretty. I hung up my backpack, which was still sitting where I left it after the opera closed, with my character shoes inside. That prompted me to put away several pairs of shoes, and hang up a couple of jackets. I did seven items of hand wash. Didn't get to the laundry cuz it was raining off and on all day and the house needed attention. I took down the remaining piece of plastic on my living room window and put it away. I swept the kitchen, and used a cat hair remover to clean up the couch cover. Also swept around the cat box. I found a home for my plastic wrap and ziploc bags, which had been sitting on the kitchen table. And I cleaned the stove.

The place looks presentable, though still a bit messy. Tomorrow morning I'll do the other load of laundry and sweep and mop. Will also change the catbox sometime tomorrow.

Results: I spoke with my friend who canceled our movie the other day. We needed to discuss some things that were bothering me. All is well now and I am glad we cleared the air. I also got ABC on the converter! I just had to rescan the channels. I thought I had done that, but nope. I talked with my two dads to say Happy Father's Day, and my mom about the trip, and my stepmom cuz it's their anniversary too! It was a good day, and I feel like I got a lot done, even though much of the clutter is just buried now. That's OK, cuz I still got rid of a lot of stuff!

Saturday, June 20, 2009

Saturday

Well, my mom is coming to visit on Tuesday, so I'm in "I must clean" mode. The weekend is devoted to getting the place presentable. That said, I didn't get far today. Took a nap for a couple hours. I think it's something I'm eating. I got sleepy at the seminar right after lunch too, and it was the same food I ate today. Annoying.

Anyway, today's decluttering is rather a departure. Since I'm finally cleaning up the mess left by my lack of time during the opera, a lot went out the door. And I also decided to get rid of some of the stuff I was hanging on to for the yard sale, if I ever got back out there. So I recycled nine newspapers and numerous other pieces of random paper, envelopes, inserts, etc. Did most of my filing - two MONTHS worth! Uhhhh! I don't know how I've stood the mess. Got laundry done and bought my converter box! for digital TV. With the coupon it only cost $10! I can't get ABC for some reason, but I kinda hate their shows anyway, so I'll watch my soap online and forget the rest. Also still can't get the other PBS channel in our area. Weird.

ANYWAY. The yard sale stuff. I took the cute little end table down to the lobby, and I'm getting rid of the peach baskets my neighbor gave me to sell. My other neighbor might want them, and if not they are going to the lobby. The table was gone in a couple hours, BTW.

Got some dishes done too. Still more to do, along with another load of laundry. And I took out the huge masses of recycling I'd accumulated. Tomorrow I actually have to CLEAN, which is another thing altogether.

Results: I am breathing a sigh of relief at the sudden sense of space in here. Woof!

Thurs/Fri

I was in a seminar all day Thursday and Friday, and had to get up super early to get there, so I was pretty fried by the time I got home. But, I managed to remember to declutter.

Thursday: Recycled a paper.

Friday: Threw away the container I brought my lunch in. It leaked and I have a couple others anyhow (they leak too).

Results: I got a check in the mail Thursday! Totally forgot it was coming, it's a rebate on products I buy and sell. It was about $10, but still, nice to get money in the mail!

Thursday, June 18, 2009

Sunday - Wednesday

Wow, what a week! No time for anything.

Sunday: Uprooted a dead/dying plant and tossed it over the fence into the vacant lot next door. Fertilizer! I also took a pair of cushy house socks down to the lobby, but no one took them so I retrieved them later. There might have been one other item but I've forgotten.

Monday: Recycled a newspaper.

Tuesday: Recycled another newspaper.

Wednesday: Threw away a postcard about a movie I was going to see. I only was interested because I thought it would be nice to see it with a scientifically inclined friend - it was about looking at space through a special telescope. He canceled, and I wasn't that interested - it was more about spending time with him.

Sunday, June 14, 2009

Weds - Sat

Wednesday's declutter: When my friend gave me all that cat food and stuff, I found a measuring cup in the bag of food. I use a measuring cup for my cat's food as well. Anyway, I got to thinking the person might not have meant to toss the measuring cup. So when I visited him on Weds., I left the cup in the free area in his building, so the cat food giver could have it back if he/she wanted it.

Thurs: I took a piece of sensitive information to work and shredded it.

Fri: Took care of a billing problem at my gym and shredded the notice that I got about it.

Sat: Left a book in the lobby after reading it for the last time. This was something I bought years ago, written by my then-favorite author, which I now realize was not up to his usual standard of style and wit. I used to like it even so, although I found it a little sappy. But it's just not as good as his older books. His books used to include wit. This one was all goo, and I've outgrown it.

Results: More money coming in. Lots of help with a bout of sciatica, in the form of people massaging and cracking my back during the week and during the performance Friday night. I was having trouble walking cuz my right leg was so sore, and today I was able to put weight on it with no spasm, so those massages were a godsend. Sciatica is new to me - though it was probably the cause of the mysterious hip pain I had in April - and it makes it difficult to get around easily. It was two friends who clued me in to what was wrong with me. Gotta get back to the chiropractor, it's been too long!

Wednesday, June 10, 2009

Tuesday Again

Correction: Recycled nine newspapers. I'm such a junk collector! I think decluttering is an ongoing process. Yeah, you can get rid of a lot of stuff over time, but the day in, day out stuff like filing, mail, newspapers is always going to be there. Just got to get to the point where that's all the clutter one has, and then it can be dealt with on a daily basis.

Tuesday, June 9th

For some reason June 9th is ringing a bell for me. Oh well! Today's declutter: I deleted 62 emails and recycled a newspaper.

Monday, June 8, 2009

Monday

Today I found a phone info card that I had kept that was obsolete, so it went into the recycle bin.

Results: Holy cow! I got my rent check really early. Yay!

Sunday, June 7, 2009

Sunday June 7th

Today's declutter: I took a flashlight belt holster (that's what they call it!) to the lobby. I got it with my flashlight two years ago and didn't think to use it out in the woods. I don't wear a belt anyway.

Also threw away a #5 plastic container that I was going to recycle only I couldn't remember where they accept them.

Results: A packed house for today's performance, and a great show. Lots of fun today! And getting home early is the best part of all!

Saturday, June 6, 2009

Friday/Saturday

Friday's declutter: I took an Elizabeth Arden makeup pencil sharpener to the lobby. It only seemed to work with its own brand of pencils. Anyway, I have another one that works with every brand.

Today's declutter: I left a container of catnip on my neighbor's door. My cat doesn't seem to like it, but hers do.

Thursday, June 4, 2009

Thursday, Take 2

Just went to the store and recycled 22 plastic bags while there. That is a lot of plastic bags. Most of them were sitting in a drawer for the last two or three or five years, cuz I might need them someday. Never really thought about how many were already in there when I shoved a new one in. Now there are maybe five bags in the drawer, and no new ones going in.

Thursday's Clutter

Having a day off is great - look how on top of this blog I am today!

Today I threw away three pairs of underwear which had holes. I'm very attached to my undies cuz they are so comfy (cotton!), and I get them in pretty colors, so I usually repair small holes a couple times before pitching them. One of these was at that point, the other two were at the point of riding up, which as any woman knows is annoying as hell, so they were no longer wearable.

Results: Like I said, I'm attached. Throwing stuff away takes resolve and courage. I'm developing both as a result of decluttering and doing this blog.

Monday/Tuesday/Wednesday

Monday: I remembered to give my friend the hankies!

Tuesday: I took a piece of mail to work to shred.

Wednesday: Threw away two twist ties and a rubber band. I'm not down on these little items anymore. If it's clutter, it counts.

Results: I got some flirting in this week! It was fun and made me feel good even though there may not be any actual interest on the other party's part.

I also have a day off! Thursdays tend to be short days for me anyway, but after four solid days of rehearsal, two of them very late nights, it's really nice to have a free day to get housekeeping stuff done and not have to go anywhere.

Monday, June 1, 2009

Sunday, May 31st

Sunday's declutter was supposed to be two handkerchiefs I gave to a friend. But I forgot to give them to him! So I got home close to midnight and began looking for something to declutter. I recycled some aluminum foil, but felt like that wasn't really a declutter, so kept looking. It was a few minutes after midnight, but I found an old dental tape container that was empty. I'd saved it so that I could find the tape again cuz I liked it so much. But I had found it and used it and didn't like it anymore looooongggg ago. So it went into the garbage.

I may inadvertently have decluttered something else, though. I was using a jacket a friend gave me for a costume in the opera, and I left it in the seats at the theater. I hope it's still there today or that someone in the show picked it up.

Happy June! TODAY I'll give away those hankies.

Sunday, May 31, 2009

Wednesday - Saturday

This week I decided to step up the decluttering, and deliberately get rid of two items at least one day. I've done two or more items at a time before, but the plan was always one a day.

So what happens? It's the weakest week of decluttering ever. I still did it, but the little baggie on Tuesday was only the beginning of tiny decluttering. I have had to keep reminding myself that the tiny stuff is also clutter, taking up space in my life, and it counts!

Wednesday: I threw away two rubberbands. I was pretty low about this. Have thrown away rubberbands before but they never made it into the blog. But I don't use rubberbands, so they are clutter for me.

Thursday: This was a result of some results! I took a catbox deordorizer to the lobby. It was far too strongly scented and would have given me a headache. It was given to me that day, so I also recycled a few newspapers so I could say I got rid of stuff that was already in the house.

Friday: I threw away some old body scrub that was...old. Too old to use. There was hardly any left anyway. Also gave a neighbor some cat treats I bought that my cat didn't like. She's picky about her treats. She'll eat plants that make her sick, but not treats made out of meat.

Saturday: Finally! Took a bag of clothes and stuff to the thrift store! There were seven items of women's clothing, two items of men's clothing, one indeterminite pair of shorts (though it looked manly), that shower scrunchy I couldn't give away before, and 5 notebooks. Three of the clothing items were mine, the rest came from my neighbors. And the notebooks were from work. We ordered them and didn't like them, and Staples said to donate them to charity, so that's what I did.

Results: A friend gave me a whole bag full of cat food and cat stuff. He found it in the free stuff area of HIS apartment building and snagged it for me! That's where the deodorizer came from. It's great cuz the cat likes the food (though again, not the treats!), so that means I get an extra week or two before I need cat food again. I gave the cat one of the toys, a squeaky mouse, to play with, and she thought it was real. She was running around with it in her mouth, meowing at me just like when she catches a real mouse (she's caught two or three since I've had her - they pretty much stay away). I took it away from her before she tried to eat it, but in the interim it was pretty funny.

It was kinda sad too, though, cuz there was a brush in the bag that still had cat hair in it, and you know whoever gave the stuff away just lost their cat one way or another. Awww.

Anyway. I just have to say, if you throw out a rubberband that you are never going to use, YOU ARE DECLUTTERING. One item a day, big or small, means you're in the game.

Sunday/Monday/Tuesday

Sunday: Took a very small notepad to the lobby. It was one of those freebies you get with offers in the mail. You know how they give you a bunch of semi-useful stuff so you feel obligated to buy their product? This was one of those.

Monday: This was a big one for me. I took a t-shirt down to the lobby. It was something I got from doing a coaching program. The program didn't work for me and the stuff they gave me for doing it was useless and not what they originally promised. So I certainly was not going to advertise for them. Let someone else wear the shirt and say "I don't know, I found it in the lobby" whenever anyone asks them about the program.

Tuesday: I threw away a tiny baggie. Pretty lame, I know. I think the day I recycled one receipt was worse. I recycled a couple of newspapers Tuesday to bolster the decluttering.

This might be the first day I've missed (gasp!), because I didn't toss it till after midnight, so technically it was Wednesday. I'm trying to remember if there were other late nights when I got home and immediately took something out. Anyway, I was still up, so I think I could count it as Tuesday. But if you all disagree, leave a comment. I guess I had to slip up sometime - no one is perfect.

Results: HOLY CRAP! I mean, COW. I got the rest of my rent check. Got TWO months worth plus $75 in late fees! After the management fee that's probably $65 to me. I'll take it!

The Rest of The Week

Wednesday: Took a half-used bottle of bubble bath down to the lobby.

Thursday: Removed the shower filter from my shower and pitched it. It was cracked and spraying so I couldn't get enough pressure without getting the wall all wet. The paint is already peeling - need to get the landlord on that - and getting it wet would only make it worse. Whoever painted it last used matte paint rather than semi-gloss. Evidently this was not an experienced painter. I am going to buy a metal shower filter soon, which will never crack and spray water where it shouldn't.

Friday: Tore down the plastic on my bedroom window and threw it away. It had a hole from the tape so next winter I will need a new sheet anyway. Also took some dead flowers out to the empty lot next door - fertilizer!

Saturday: Threw away my old tennis shoes. I wore them to walk to the Farmers' Market in the morning, and my legs were aching before I even got there.

Results: I'm getting a pile of extra money in a few days from late payments for one of my tenants. He was served 5-day notice this week and his dad came in and paid. Since he was so late, there should be at least an extra $50 on this check. I love late fees.
