Saturday, Plus Thursday and Friday

Thursday: I just remembered that I recycled a piece of paper.

Friday addendum: I recycled a postcard, two tickets to a free event that I didn't attend, and a card and envelope.

Saturday: Recycled a piece of paper, a paper coffee cup, some unusable napkins, and a solicitation letter.

Results: I just got a brainwave about a really easy way to make money. I'm a tax preparer, and it's tax time. I'm putting an ad on craigslist. YAY!

Friday

We had a heck of a snowstorm here on Thursday night and all day Friday. The winds were high and the snow so heavy that I think it actually qualified as a blizzard. My idea of a blizzard is the blinding white can't-see-a-foot-in-front-of-you snowstorms that I read about in the Little House books as a kid, so to me what they call blizzards around here are NOT. This time, though, I could barely see the landscape from my window, so it got close.

Of course, the weatherman did not call it a blizzard this time. But they did interrupt my TV programming 20 times to tell me it was still snowing. I'd like to get my hands on the producer of ABC local news sometime so I could tell him that people at home watching TV in a snowstorm only care about their game shows and soaps and don't want to be updated every half-hour on what they can see out their windows. :)

Anyway, Friday's declutter: I recycled an envelope, three newspapers, and a flyer for some check ordering service that I've had sitting around for several months. Like I'm ever gonna order from them.

I also recycled a menu earlier in the week.

Where's Tuesday?

I just realized I missed posting for Tuesday! And I remembered that on Tuesday or Wednesday I actually recycled a pill bottle that I'd been hanging on to to give a sample of allergy herbs to a nice bus driver I met up north. But I won't be going up there again soon, so the bottle could go.

Wednesday/Thursday

So, I've been slacking on the physical decluttering this week, although I really had the urge to get rid of stuff yesterday while I was coming home from work. Funny how getting home takes the steam out of my radiator.

HOWEVER, I just had a big mental declutter about twenty minutes ago, thanks again to that conversation with my friend on Saturday. I was emailing him to express my views on the subject of my big dreams in life, which we had discussed, and my frustration with the naysaying of said dreams by the people in my life over the years. As I told my friend, the irony is that 15 years ago I was willing to go a different way with my dream - pretty much the opposite of what I want now - and people said I couldn't do that either! Basically, no matter what I wanted, no one supported me. And it hit me all of a sudden that I had been buying in to everyone else's "you can't do that" point of view, instead of just holding fast to what I wanted and focusing all my energy on creating that dream. So now the belief that I can't have what I really want is pretty strong in me. I've been working on changing that belief, and it's been a hard one. If people had just said to me "That's wonderful. Go for it," how different my belief might be now.

As Morty and Shelly Lefkoe teach, once you figure out the source of a belief and realize that it's not THE TRUTH, you can get free of it. I think I just got free - or at least opened a window onto the possibility that my belief might not be true. And that is a HUGE declutter!

Weekend Results

I forgot to mention that I had a really incredible dinner with a friend Saturday night, and as a result of our conversation was able to declutter my brain of something that had been bugging me for six months. This happened on Tuesday. It was very freeing.

I also had dinner with my good downstairs neighbor friends on Sunday night, and that was just fun!

Time Goes By...

Wow, I knew it had been a few days but I didn't realize it had been almost a week! I'll try to recreate my week.

Thursday: I don't remember what if anything I decluttered. I think I tossed a candy box into the recycle bin at work.

Friday: I balanced the checkbook and recycled the envelope the statement came in. I also got my rent check and recycled the envelope. Oh, and I recycled the packaging from a pair of tights I bought.

Saturday: Gone all day. I don't think I did anything.

Sunday: Gone all day.

Monday: OK, finally got something. I recycled two sale postcards.

Results: I bought an option on Thursday and it moved around so much after that that I was lucky to get out with $32 profit on Monday, after it was up $1.70 from where I got in. A profit is a profit, AND it helps if you don't buy at the high of the day :) When options go sideways they lose value, but they lose it faster when they go down before going up. It takes longer to get back to where you got in. Anyway, this stock is inching upwards every day. I probably need to wait for a better trend or a big up or down day.

But I made a profit, so I can't complain! The percentage return on my investment is about 3.7%, over four days. I don't know, I think making almost 4% in four days is pretty darn good! That's more than you'd get in a bank in a YEAR. The trick is to do it consistently, and that's what I'm working on.

Monday - Wednesday

No declutter on Monday. I don't remember why. Just forgot I think.

Tuesday: I cut pieces off of six credit cards and an old driver's license and threw them away. I think I recycled an envelope too. Oh, and I did recycle a box.

Today: I recycled a plastic bottle.

Results: I had the nicest Valentine's surprise Monday night. My guy was away on Sunday, so he stopped by to see me when he got home, and surprised me with a ride to my rehearsal all the way on the other end of town! I had to go to the grocery store first, so he took me there and told me to get the flowers I wanted and he'd pay for them! They actually still had the bouquet I wanted, so I got it. It's beautiful sitting on my piano. So I was a very happy woman Monday night. :) I even stayed happy all day Tuesday. Hooray!

Velentine's Day

Today I took the paper recycling out. That's another paper bag recycled.

Happy Valentine's Day!

Friday/Saturday

Last night I recycled still more: A list of things to do from maybe a year ago, and two envelopes and a couple inserts from bills I paid.

I also did a lot of 2009 catch-up on Quicken. Maybe an hour's worth of work, updating investment and retirement accounts. There's only a few more to do and I'll be ready for taxes.

Today: I haven't really decluttered yet, but I did take glass/plastic/metal recycling down to the garbage area. So I guess that bag that the stuff was in is my declutter :) I also took out the garbage.

OK, I just opened a piece of mail and recycled all but the part with my name and address on it. I'll take that to work to shred it.

Results: Oh, man. I started taking a supplement on Tuesday night to help with this problem I think I have. By Wednesday morning my hair was tangling less - no kidding, it was that fast. (I didn't say before how bad the tangling was: I had rats' nests in my hair two or three times a DAY. I could not run my fingers through my hair. My hair hadn't been tangly since my childhood, so this was really freaky. Since starting this supplement I've had one or two really snarly moments, but no more rats' nests!) By yesterday morning when I was combing my hair after my shower, I noticed it felt silky. My hair has always been very fine and silky. But I didn't realize that I'd lost the silkiness till I got it back. The final change that I've noticed in my hair is that the shine is coming back - it had gotten pretty dull.

The really big change, though, is in my energy and motivation level. I feel GREAT! And I'm getting things done without having to talk myself into it or even think about it, which hasn't happened in a very, very long time - years. The chronic cold I have had since Thanksgiving was starting to come back Tuesday. By Wednesday evening it was gone. The sore throat and cough just went away. As a result, I can sing again and have rejoined the cast of an opera I'd previously dropped out of due to my constant relapsing. My immune system feels strong again.

So. Now I'm ready to say what I think the problem was. I think I have hypothyroidism. My grandma had thyroid problems and it's fairly common. Common symptoms include fatigue, lack of motivation (!) or lethargy, dry hair and skin, low body temperature, frequent infections, and weight gain. Tangly hair and dry eyes are less common symptoms. Except for weight gain, I've had all of the above. The great thing about it is, it's totally fixable with either nutrition or thyroid replacement. Clearly all I needed was the nutrition or I wouldn't be seeing these results so fast.

The best part about all this is that I've used and sold a certain brand of supplements since the mid-90s, and at some point I got this herbal formula that was designed for thyroid support. I got it for some other thing that someone recommended it for, but I hadn't been taking it. This is the supplement I started taking Tuesday, and it is working. These products are amazing and have always worked for me, but I was in such good health that the effects were subtle. Not this time - I think four days to increased energy is pretty dramatic! Apparently with thyroid the turnaround time for symptoms can be pretty quick, but I'm still floored! If anyone wants more info on the supplements, let me know. I'll post a link where you can buy them wholesale as one of my customers.

I'm also adding coconut oil to my diet - I read online that it is good for thyroid imbalance as well. I already know it to be anti-viral and have it around the house, but I'll be taking it daily now to see what happens.

With these results, I can see the decluttering accelerating because of my increased motivation level! That's what I call an upward spiral!

Friday Again

Forgot to say that I recycled two or three envelopes today. I also did a bunch of filing.

Friday

Today's declutter: I found an old coupon and recycled it, then found three old post-its and recycled them.

Results: Well, my options did best this morning, and then the stock went down and came back up during the last 10 minutes of the trading day. So I did get out with a profit, but would have been better off to get out early this morning as the price of the options didn't get that high again. But hey, a profit is a profit!

Thursday

Today I shredded the three or four sensitive papers I had forgotten to shred last week at work :) I also recycled a box, paid a bill and recycled the envelope, and opened some mail and recycled one envelope and three inserts.

Results: The options I bought on Tuesday are up cuz the stock went up today! It's being listed on the S&P 500 tomorrow and is expected to post record volume. That should mean it goes up even more tomorrow, so I will turn a nice profit on the options! Should make up for what I lost the other day and then some. It was a sure thing but if I hadn't read about it I'd never have known - very happy!

One of my bosses today mentioned a colleague who was actually responsible for getting me the position with their office. She had stopped by the office, and he said she was really busy and I should call her. So I emailed her today to see if she had work and she emailed right back and asked for my resume! I also put in job applications at Whole Foods Market on Tuesday night and Wednesday morning, cuz I think it would be a really fun place to work. So I have lots of irons in the fire.

Blizzard Wednesday

Ohhhh, it's been snowing all day, and it's just wonderful! We haven't had a big snowfall in a few years.

Wednesday's declutter: I opened two pieces of mail to file and recycled the envelopes and inserts.

Tuesday, February 9, 2010

Tuesday

One more for Monday: I took a book down to the lobby along with that broiler pan.

Today's declutter: I threw away a couple rubber bands, and recycled some product cards from samples I was given.

Results: I think I've figured out why I've been sick for two and half months, and why my hair has been constantly tangled for the last few months for no apparent reason. I was looking up tangled hair and found something that fits a lot of symptoms I've had, whether recently or for years. I am going to make some dietary changes and see where that gets me.

Monday, Monday

I forgot to mention in yesterday's post that I also dusted the TV screen and table.

Well, I got out of a stock option today with less of a loss than I had Friday, but more of a loss than I could have ended up with had I stayed in just a bit longer. Still, it hit my target price, went below, went up, went down, then finally started going up again, so I thought it was time to get out before it went higher again. Oh yeah: It was a put, which goes up in value when the stock goes down. I'm still learning :) I learned some things about it today. It's fun, even when you lose.

Today's declutter: I did the last of the dishes from the roachy cupboard. Among them was a broiler tray that could have been cleaner. Now I know what the attraction was. Anyway, I have a stove with a broiler tray, and I decided I don't need an extra broiler tray. I don't even remember where I got the thing. So it is going down to the lobby this afternoon when I go grocery shopping.

I also straightened up the kitchen table, which was totally piled up and messy. All the lids that used to be in the lid drawer (which has been sitting on the floor for months) were sitting there, along with measuring cups, a stack of menus, plastic wrap and bags, a potholder and towels, and miscellaneous stuff. I was putting last night's dishes away, and came up with the bright idea to put the smaller lids in a great big plastic container, where they can be sealed away and safe from roaches. With those gone, there was room to organize the plastic wrap and bags, the measuring cups, the potholder, the towels, the rest of the lids, and the few remaining items. The menus are the only thing I haven't sorted out yet. The kitchen looks even better than it did after yesterday's cleaning :)

What seems to be true for me is that sunny days motivate me to get things done, whether housework or embroidery. I think I can whittle away at the housework each day for 10 or 15 minutes, and then on sunny days get more done, until it becomes habit to keep things clean and neat.

Sunday

Today's declutter: I recycled a plastic water bottle.

Cleaning: I did a bunch of dishes and then cleaned up the stove, backsplash, AND crockpot. It was grimy work, and HARD, so I didn't do much else in the kitchen right away. I did move the now-clean dish cupboard back into place - had moved it out to get a giant roach the other night. I couldn't believe it - this cupboard is CLEAN, and I'm cleaning up after any food I cut on the cutting board.

After a few hours of watching funny movies this afternoon, I cleaned the toilet, then took out the trash and the recycling, and put new bags in the recycle bin (another declutter!). I swept the entire apartment, beginning with the kitchen. I put away the laundry, changed the sheets, flipped the mattress, pulled out the rug from under the bed and vacuumed it, and made the bed. Then I did another load of dishes to keep things clean in the kitchen! It feels very much cleaner in here - amazing what sweeping can do! Yes, there were a few other things I did, but it's sweeping that always makes it feel really clean.

Oh, yeah, at some point I also threw a bunch of borax behind the backsplash and behind the stove. Roaches don't like it.

Sunday, and New Thoughts

It occurred to me as I looked over my last post that I might be a slob. I certainly am extremely lazy when it comes to cleaning. But the items I threw out border on hoarder territory. Seriously, six-year-old gum? Moldy yogurt? Just have to wonder.

That was the point of this project though: to get me down to the stuff underlying the stuff. So I've hit a standstill of sorts in that nothing big is getting done. There seems to be a level of clutter I'm comfortable with, and when I clear out to that point, I stop. Then it builds up again, and I clear out, and stop. Sometimes I maintain, but there's not much headway beyond that point.

The difference between me and a true hoarder, though, is that I actually CAN throw stuff out past that point of comfortable clutter. I have a choice. It's not emotionally painful for me to get rid of stuff aside from a twinge or two. So why do I not choose to chuck it all? That's the question of the day :)

Today is a sunny day and I seem to feel energized when it's sunny, so there will be much kitchen cleaning and possibly some larger-scale decluttering. Will post later.

Saturday, and More Friday

On Friday night I threw away a container of OLD yogurt. Also tossed an old pack of ginger gum (this might have been Thursday though) because...let's just say it was exposed to contamination of the insect variety. It was icky gum anyway; I only bought it to settle my stomach on the train home six or seven years ago. I had very suddenly come down with the flu.

Anyway. More roach abatement to be done.

Saturday: I opened a piece of mail and recycled the envelope.

Friday Correction

I totally forgot that I paid two bills Friday and recycled their envelopes and inserts!

Friday, February 5, 2010

Friday

I did not declutter today. However, I did catch up on my Quicken expenses through today. Still have work to do on last year, but not a lot of it. I will get on that this weekend, along with some more deroaching work and some decluttering. Maybe this is the weekend I'll get those items listed on craigslist!

Thursday

Whoops! Today I took a few sensitive papers to work to shred, but I forgot to shred 'em! So I recycled the newspaper I brought in today. I don't think that really counts since it didn't start out in the house, but there's nothing else to report so far!

Wednesday, February 3, 2010

Tuesday/Wednesday

Tuesday's declutter: I got a West Elm catalog in the mail and after looking quickly through it, I recycled it. I want their catalogs because I got some GREAT organic towels from their online store, but man, they have seriously ugly colors for their stuff right now.

Wednesday's (today's) declutter: I recycled three receipts and a post-it that had website addresses I wanted to keep. I rewrote them all on a single post-it so I could pitch 'em!

Monday, February 1, 2010

P.S.

I just checked the mail and left a Pottery Barn catalog in the lobby. I have already requested removal from their mailing list, but it takes six weeks or so. I also just recycled a tea box (you know, the paper box your teabags come in).

Monday, Feb. 1, 2010!

Well, I am excited because today was a big up day in the markets after two big down days, and that means a lot of entry points for stock options if the market goes down again tomorrow. I'm getting better at figuring this stuff out - watching these classes on trading and hearing how the expert picks points of entry and exit is really sinking in!

Today's declutter: I recycled three leftover strips of paper from my perforated tear-off notebook. Big declutter, I know :) But I did make it to the store to buy sponges so I can get my kitchen super-clean and keep it that way to keep the roaches at bay. It's a little embarrassing to write about the roaches, but they are a fact of life in the big city regardless of whether things are clean.

That said, I've definitely been guilty of attracting them via leaving dirty dishes out overnight, and not washing my cast-iron pans every time I use them. You're not supposed to wash cast-iron, really. But if I'm not going to wash them I need to store them in the fridge where the bugs won't smell the food! I also will need to store my cat's food in a moat overnight, to drown the roaches, or stick what she doesn't eat in plastic. She nibbles all day so that could be a challenge, but I'll figure something out.

Anyway, I'm going to clean everything in the kitchen thoroughly this week, and do my best to keep it that clean. There will always be one or two roaches, but if I take away their food and water the majority will find friendlier homes.
