Happy Blue Moon New Year!

It's New Year's Eve, and we have a once-in-20-years blue moon today! I took the astronomical wonder as an opportunity today to think of what I'd like to create before the next blue moon (2 years away - the next New Year's blue moon is in 2028, but we get ordinary blue moons every couple years), as well as what I'd like to release. You could call it super-charged resolutions. I also think of it as mental decluttering. I made a fun little drawing of it all, starting at the moment of the full moon, then burned it on the snowy (yes!) fire escape at the moment of the lunar eclipse (another rarity on New Year's Eve). I got the idea from a gal named Morgana Rae, whose newsletter had a link to the site of a guy named Ton Pascal, where I found instructions for the ritual. It was fun, I feel good, and I'm full of energy to create/release the things I listed!

So. Today's physical declutter was the envelope and inserts from a bill I paid. I'll also file that bill and yesterday's bill to complete today's declutter.

HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE!

Wednesday

On Tuesday I ended up taking out the garbage and some recycling overflow, so that was my cleaning for the day.

Wednesday's declutter: I paid a bill and recycled the envelope. Also took out ALL the recycling, including the bags I usually bring back up. Since I have a surplus of bags, I thought it might be good to change out the old ones. More decluttering!

Did NOT end up watching the trading class - my guy's roommate had a party which we were invited to join, so the class went by the wayside! Next week, we are getting started again for sure.

Tuesday (Today)

I forgot to mention that yesterday I also recycled one magazine and took another down to the lobby, and took some coupons to the lobby too. Also threw away a lid for a Glad container. It was cracking, so no good anymore for keeping food. I might keep the container just to put stuff in. Or not.

OK, today's declutter: I printed out statements for a couple credit cards and matched up all the receipts to the right statements. Then I filed the newer receipts in the files for each card. Then I printed my internet service bill and filed that too (after paying it). Finally, I put the newest cash receipts with the pile that remains for Quicken entry. Oh, yeah, and I recycled a duplicate menu from my takeout menu file.

Going to see my guy tonight! And we're going to watch a trading lesson too, so maybe I'll get some trading in before year-end.

Results: Getting paid tomorrow, getting Unemployment payment the next day, getting an advance in a couple days on work I'll do next week! Hooray!

Monday

Monday's declutter: I spent 45 minutes entering receipts to Quicken. These are old receipts that I've held on to because I didn't feel like entering them when I got 'em. It's amazing - if I weren't such a procrastinator I wouldn't have so much clutter and so much cleaning to do. Food for thought for New Year's resolutions, which I normally don't do, cuz, why wait for the new year? But since the new year starts in two days, well, why not do a resolution or two? I can start them now. :)

As for cleaning, I don't think I spent 15 minutes on it, but I did do some. I cleaned my blender, which somehow got food spatters all over the base. Bug magnet! So I cleaned all the little crevices and it's nice and white again. Now I just need to find or replace the gasket so I can use the darn thing - gasket disappeared months ago. I think I accidentally flung it across the room when I was grabbing a utensil that it was hanging on in the dish rack, but it's also possible that it somehow landed in the garbage.

I also put away some clothes rather than piling them on my chair. And I did laundry but that's not really cleaning.

Results: I'm feeling good this morning. My health seems improved (knocking on the wooden table) and I'm managing to sustain my happy mood. Things feel like they are going my way!

Sunday

Today's declutter: Continued the filing by, well, filing it all. I did two 15-minute stints on this. Also recycled three newspapers earlier, and a bunch of expired coupons after the filing was done. During the filing I got rid of 7 or 8 envelopes too, and added to the shred pile.

I also did two 15-minute stints of cleaning, finishing up the bathroom. Amazing how much time it takes to clean up cat hair. I hope that future bathroom cleanups don't take so long. Maybe if I do it more often it won't :)

Now I'm at a point of needing to declutter bigger stuff again cuz the paper clutter is just about done. This is where it gets challenging for me. My brain sort of shuts off and I can't think of anything else to get rid of, even though I have tons of useless junk. We'll see how it goes!

'Twas the day after Christmas...

...and I was TIRED when I woke up at 8:00. Went back to sleep till around 10:00 and was still tired, but I got up cuz the cat had to be fed. I spent most of the day knitting, watching TV, and eating, but in the back of my mind was my declaration that I'd do 15 minutes each of decluttering and cleaning.

So at around 5:30, I got started on the decluttering by taking the stack of papers and books on my table and sorting them out for filing, putting away, and recycling. I managed to put away a couple of books and magazines and sort stuff into piles for each drawer of the file cabinet, then hit a snag when I started filing because there were papers missing! So I had to hunt for the missing stuff, which took some time, and then put all THAT into the proper piles. I ended up doing two 15-minute increments. I didn't finish the filing yet, but I did recycle about 10 old newspapers and some stock info that I didn't need to keep, along with several envelopes from stuff I hadn't previously opened. This stuff had been hidden away at Thanksgiving, so it's about time I dug it out to be filed/trashed. Right now the cat is enjoying lying on the various piles of paper on the floor.

I then did 15 minutes of cleaning, spending the whole time on my shower tile and the tub. My shower tile is a mess all the time, because whoever put in the shower and faucets did a terrible job of retiling. The grout is disgusting, but since it's not a life or death issue I will have to write a letter to my landlord and probably call the city for a maintenance request in order to get it fixed. So I muddle through with cleaning as best I can. The tub is in a similar situation - the porcelain is peeling off. Personally, I don't know why the tub needs a porcelain coating anyhow. It's an old cast-iron tub and it's white, so to me the porcelain seems like an unnecessary bother. I'm sure the tub would be much easier to keep clean without it. Hm. Maybe I'll try to remove it.

Anyway. I had forgotten how good it felt to get things done, and how much can be done in 15 minutes. I'll be doing this again tomorrow - probably will finish the filing and clean the rest of the bathroom. Who knows, maybe I'll even do another 15 minutes on the filing tonight. I just got done doing the dishes (they don't count as cleaning cuz you really should keep up with them every day) though, so I might just sit back with my knitting and watch Britcoms and An American in Paris for the rest of the night :) Don't want to burn out my declutter urges!

Christmas Day - Happy Holidays!

Today I recycled some miscellaneous pieces of giftwrap. I save the stuff so that's pretty major for me!

I knitted a couple of Christmas gifts for friends, and came home inspired to finish a sweater I'd started some time ago. Only trouble was, I wanted to try a color design I came up with, but the sweater I'd started was done with a cable in the front. So I ripped out the whole thing and am starting over! I don't know if I can do this cuz there's no chart, it's just a drawing at this point, but hey, it's worth a try. I'm knitting the sweater in the round, which is fun cuz there's no seams to sew at the end! The sleeves could be interesting to figure out...but there are experienced knitters at a shop I know, so I can always take my sweater in and ask them their opinions on how best to do it.

Anyway, it was a lovely Christmas with my friends, I got some fun gifts that I'm enjoying, and tomorrow and Sunday I'm going to do 15-minute increments of cleaning and of decluttering and see where that takes me. Hopefully it will inspire me to do additional 15-minute cleaning/decluttering blasts! I actually already started today, when I put away a bunch of clothes that were piled up.

Oh, forgot to mention that I got five cards this week from family/friends, with a check from my parents in one of them! I thought that was pretty great :) Merry merry, everyone!

Christmas Eve

On Christmas Eve I took three headbands down to the lobby. I bought them for a costume but they were too small - apparently they were for little girls and even my small head was too big for them, haha! Someone in the building snatched them up right away, so some little girl should be pretty happy right now.

I also threw out some envelopes and the package inserts from some Xmas gifts I bought.

Happy Holidays!

Wednesday

Today I threw some dead flowers into the empty lot next door, for fertilizer just in case they ever put a garden there :)

Results: My work gave me a card with a little bonus cash in it, yay! And a co-worker gave each of us homemade cookies - they are GOOD! (I brought brownies.) My bosses also bought lunch for the office.

I also was overwhelmed today by the kindness of several strangers. I felt lightheaded at the grocery store, and a worker noticed and got me some water and then a chair. Later he got me ice (works for dizziness if you put in on the back of your neck) and brought a co-worker to stay with me. Even the store manager came out to check if I was alright or needed anything. They were ready to call an ambulance or a friend for me if I needed it. When I felt better, the guy who was staying with me walked me to the last item I needed to buy, and took me to the front of the checkout line so I could get home quicker. They really made my day.

THEN I met another woman at the entrance to the subway who said some kind things to me, which literally brought me to tears of gratitude. I've been feeling so low what with being sick so long and having a few numbers done on me, and these people today, along with one of my sisters and my mom, made me feel so much better just by being kind to me. Kindness goes a long way, people. Never forget how much it can mean to someone.

I also found four pennies today! It's been awhile since I found any change and it was fun!

Monday, Tuesday, Funday, Bluesday

On Monday I didn't declutter anything that I can remember. I did start making a Christmas present for a friend, and got a very nice $10 tree :) AND, I got to see my guy and he is getting me a present I really wanted! Very happy!

Today, though, I cleaned up my coffee table somewhat, which included recycling a couple pieces of paper. I also made a couple phone calls to complain about products I recently bought that weren't up to snuff, and then recycled the packaging for said products. I changed the cat litter (WAY overdue) and took out a bunch of recycling. And I went to the grocery store for brownie ingredients to take to work tomorrow cuz my boss asked me for brownies last week. Then I started thinking about some passive-aggressive behavior of some people I care about and got sad. I wonder what I ever did to deserve unkindness from family and friends, or maybe that's "friends."

But now the brownies are baking and the sugar from the leftover batter is making me happy again :)

Results: I had another eye appointment yesterday as a follow-up test to last month's cuz I was complaining of lowered vision. Did the test and my eyes are normal! Also got some trial contacts that are a slightly different Rx which might be better for me. Then today my complaint about one of the products garnered me some free product coupons!

Tomorrow: work and some more groceries, and whatever cleaning I feel like.

Sunday

Today I paid three bills and recycled the envelopes and inserts. I took it easy most of the day because while I was sick I coughed so much I hurt my ribs (the muscles), and they are finally feeling better, so I didn't want to set myself back by doing any heavy lifting. However, I got the garbage and recycling overflow ready to take out, and the dishes are done. Tomorrow I go to the eye doctor for a test, with some grocery and gift shopping along the way, and then I get to buckle down on cleaning Tuesday and Wednesday. Hopefully I will feel more energetic now that I'm finally well. Whew!

Time Keeps Flying...

Wow, between the show and being sick, I've totally been derailed from the decluttering effort. I am finally well enough to consider myself cured, although there's still a slight cough lingering. Three weeks of being sick is enough - I was beginning to forget what being well felt like.

Anyway. I decluttered yesterday. Had a plastic container lid crack as I tried to remove it, to the point where it's no longer sealing the container. So, lid and container went in the trash (they are #5 plastic and can't be recycled - at least not in NYC).

This week I'm getting back on track to actually get rid of stuff, so my honey and I can have a nice Christmas Eve together. Lots to do, feeling well enough to do it is good!

Oh yeah, the show! It went surprisingly well on Friday night, as up till I got on stage I wasn't sure I'd have a voice. Sunday was much better, though less consistent than Friday. I think it was adrenaline that saved me both times. One of my friends who is an amazing soprano paid me the nicest compliment on Sunday. She said given my handicap I should be very proud of how well I did. She could hear me throughout, and she said my acting was in character the whole time! I was very happy about that and am looking forward to seeing the video and sending scenes to my friends and family. I had eight friends there just to see me, and they all loved it and thought I did great! So it was a success though it would have been better had I been well.

Tuesday

Today I decluttered my mental state. I've been in a panic that I wouldn't be able to sing this weekend, but I did total vocal rest most of the day, and thought happy thoughts and watched TV to keep my mind off it. Then I called a friend to see if she had cough syrup, cuz if I can stop coughing the voice will have a chance to heal, and she did! And when she brought it to me she also brought soup and teas that are good for hoarseness. After eating her soup this weird feeling of being over the hump came over me. I sang a few notes this evening here and there, testing it out, and it's all there, just needs not to be aggravated by the cough. So I think I am going to be fine for the show, YAY!

Also recycled a sale flyer that came in the mail.

Sunday/Monday

I decluttered some actual clutter on Saturday besides the cans, but I can't remember what it was. Junk mail, I think. Been sick trying to get well, so haven't thought much about it...

Sunday I don't remember. I think I just sat around all day watching crummy movies till my friend brought me up some good ones. But Monday I threw out a catalog of business gifts, of all things. Since I'm not a business, I first called them up and told them not to send the biz catalog. I was on their retail catalog until recently, so they put me back on that - it's Godiva, gotta have my Godiva catalog!

I've been recycling food packaging all weekend, of course - soup cans, cardboard boxes, pill bottles (taking lots of herbs to kill the cold). Feeling better every day, almost singing again!

Ooo, results! I made $80 in my IRA account today on an option I bought Friday! Small profits add up, so I'm happy. This was a result of the trading classes I've resumed.

Saturday the 5th

Decluttering my sore throat today - bye bye! It's about time it started getting better. Also recycled a few cans today.

Friday, December 4, 2009

Friday

Today I paid three bills and recycled the envelopes and inserts. And I spent all day lolling about getting better. Throat is still buggin', but I've got my voice back, should be able to sing again in a couple days. Whew!

Setbacks

What a week. I can't remember what I decluttered but it's been CRAZY.

I had a lovely Thanksgiving with my guy, then went to Delaware the next day for voice lessons. First I went shopping for costume fabric, though, and found a gorgeous blue that was only $2 a yard! Looks like silk but it's polyester so it can be washed.

Had two lessons. The second was terrific and put me in amazing voice. Then came the setbacks. First, Greyhound bumped me to the next bus out because the idiots don't tell you that, in Wilmington, DE, online tickets have to get checked in and get boarding numbers. Without that, you're bumped. The next bus was going to make me a little late, but still okay. Then when it came, we discovered that two of us had boarding # 7. The bus driver wasn't gonna let me on for a minute, even though the woman who was right in front of me in line told her I definitely had a 7 cuz she was there and got a 6. Then someone else came up with another # 6! So the bus driver stopped loading and went indoors to find out what the hell was going on in there. She came out and said she was boarding for that bus only, but when I told her I'd been bumped from the earlier bus, she let me on. Needless to say, I will NEVER take Greyhound again. And I'm gonna call them and tell them I want my money back.

Phew, I made it on the bus! But then, on the way through NJ, we hit massive traffic. We got in an hour late and meanwhile I had developed a terrific sore throat. I went to rehearsal, and they had started late so I was just in time. Sang then went home and tried to do various things for my throat. Throat got much worse the next day and I had a fever, so I didn't go to rehearsal cuz I was worried about others getting sick. I made it to the next two rehearsals and sang mostly fine despite developing a cough. Went out Tuesday night with my guy and lost my voice the next day. I can talk but not sing. Same today, so the director of the company made other arrangements for my part for opening night tomorrow. The theater was freezing - 50 degrees or so - for all our rehearsals, which only exacerbated my cold. I even told the owners of the theater I was sick and could they please give us heat, and they didn't. So they'll be getting a bill from me for the stuff I had to buy to kill this bloody cold.

Bottom line: I don't get to sing tomorrow, and unless I'm much better I won't sing Sunday either. Next weekend I should be fine for the final two shows. I may have to go to the doctor though, cuz it's not normal to have a sore throat for five days.

Now, I believe that we create our own reality by the way we think about life and our general attitude. I've been working on a positive attitude and things have been going my way, so I'm really wondering why I created this particular reality, this week of all times. I wasn't thinking about being sick, and was feeling pretty good about my voice although I had been worried when we first started rehearsals. This cold just came out of nowhere to sideline me, so I gotta wonder if it's self-sabotage or something.

There were good things this week, too, which makes it even crazier that this happened cuz I'm still on a roll with the positivity! I found out I qualified for the trading program guarantee, so I'm getting an additional year of classes twice a week for free! That is major good news. I was a bit worried that I wouldn't get them. Maybe the worry showed up as laryngitis. I have to say, I'd rather have a couple days of laryngitis than miss out on a year's worth of classes that could help me make enough money to retire!

Enough said. Back to decluttering.
